    摘要: An engine starting device includes a first pulley mounted to the crankshaft of an engine for rotation with the crankshaft. A second pulley is mounted to an arbor that extends into a spring housing containing an elastic member. The elastic member is interconnected with the arbor such that rotation of the arbor in a loading direction loads the elastic member. A belt interconnects the two pulleys and a tensioner is mounted near the belt to selectively apply tension to the belt. When the tensioner applies sufficient tension to the belt, the second pulley rotates in response to the first pulley and crankshaft rotating. Rotation of the second pulley causes the elastic member to become loaded in response to rotation of the arbor in the loading direction. A ratchet wheel and pawl may be used to keep the arbor from rotating in the unloading direction. To initiate start up of the engine, the pawl is removed from engagement with the ratchet wheel. A starter pinion rotates on a helical gear as the elastic member is unloaded. The starter pinion engages the flywheel and causes the flywheel to rotate in the starting direction.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine (12) comprises an energy storing mechanism (14) including at least one elastic member (60) loaded in response to rotation of a rotatable engine member (72). A ratchet member (142), disposed between the elastic member and engine member, rotates in a loading direction in response to rotation of the engine member. The elastic member is loaded in response to the rotation. A pawl (221) can engage with the ratchet member to selectively prevent the ratchet member rotating in an unloading direction opposite the loading direction, to selectively prevent unloading the elastic member. This engagement establishes a line of force, the pawl being positioned with respect to it to urge the pawl and ratchet member toward staying in engagement. A pawl carrier (209) carries the pawl and can remove it from engagement with the ratchet member and. The pawl carrier is positioned to urge the pawl carrier to disengage the pawl from the ratchet member.

    摘要: An engine starting and stopping device includes a fist roller (16) selectively abutting the flywheel (46) of an engine for rotation on a first shaft (118) in response to rotation of the flywheel. A second roller (130) abuts the first roller and rotates in response to rotation to he first roller. A second shaft (122) and an overwind clutch (154) couple the second roller with a third roller such that the third roller rotates in response to rotation of the second roller. The third roller (134) abuts a spring housing (82) and causes rotation of the spring housing in response to rotation of the third roller. A spring (94) is housed within the spring housing and is loaded in response to rotation of the spring housing. The overwind clutch slips when the spring is loaded to a preselected level to protect the spring form overwinding. The spring is selectively unloaded to rotate the spring housing in an unloading direction. Rotation of the spring housing in the unloading direction causes rotation of the engine's crankshaft and startup of the engine.

    摘要: An engine includes a stationary member, a crankshaft supported for rotation by the stationary member, and a flywheel rotatable in response to rotation of the crankshaft. A fan has a plurality of fins and is rotatable in response to movement of the flywheel. A movable air vane includes a surface that deflects air from the fins as the fins move with the flywheel. The engine also includes an intake passageway for intake air and a throttle lever including a throttle pivot point and a throttle linkage aperture. The throttle linkage aperture and the throttle pivot point define a first axis having a first side and a second side. A throttle valve is disposed in the intake passageway to control the flow of intake air. The throttle valve is movable in response to movement of the throttle lever. A throttle linkage is positioned to directly or indirectly connect the air vane and the throttle lever. The throttle linkage and the movable air vane are disposed on the first side of the first axis. A resilient member is directly or indirectly connected to the stationary member and the throttle lever at a resilient member aperture that is located on the throttle lever on the second side of the first axis. The resilient member applies a force to bias the throttle lever in a first direction away from the flywheel.

    摘要: The air vane governor has improved speed droop characteristics under no load and light load conditions to prevent engine stumbling. The air vane governor includes a primary spring (50) and a secondary spring (64) both springs oppose the movement of the air vane (30) at no load and light load conditions. At increased load, the secondary spring (64) drops out. The tension on both springs (50, 64) is adjustable. The added spring force of the secondary spring (64) makes the governor less sensitive at no load and light load, resulting in more even operation, particularly during engine warmup.
