The modem provides a calibration signal for calibrating a modulation characteristic of the supply modulator, to the supply modulator. The supply modulator outputs a modulated signal in accordance with the calibrated modulation characteristic of the supply modulator based on the calibration signal from the modem.

An embodiment of an amplifier includes N ( N> 1) switch-mode power amplifier (SMPA) branches. Each SMPA branch includes two drive signal inputs and one SMPA branch output. A module coupled to the amplifier samples an input RF signal, and produces combinations of drive signals based on the samples. When an SMPA branch receives a first combination of drive signals, it produces an output signal at one voltage level. Conversely, when the SMPA branch receives a different second combination of drive signals, it produces the output signal at another voltage level. At least two of the SMPA branches produce output signals having different absolute magnitudes. A combiner combines the output signals from all of the SMPA branches to produce a combined output signal that may have, at any given time, one of 2* N +1 quantization states.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low noise amplifiers (LNAs) supporting carrier aggregation are disclosed. In an exemplary design, an apparatus (e.g., a wireless device, an integrated circuit, etc.) includes a MIMO LNA having a plurality of gain circuits, a drive circuit, and a plurality of load circuits. The gain circuits receive at least one input radio frequency (RF) signal and provide at least one amplified RF signal. Each gain circuit receives and amplifies one input RF signal and provides one amplified RF signal when the gain circuit is enabled. The at least one input RF signal include transmissions sent on multiple carriers at different frequencies to the wireless device. The drive circuit receives the at least one amplified RF signal and provides at least one drive RF signal. The load circuits receive the at least one drive RF signal and provide at least one output RF signal.

An apparatus and a method for exponentially controlling a gain of a driver amplifier to drive a power amplifier are provided. The driver amplifier includes a plurality of cascode amplifier segments, wherein when a plurality of candidate gain values of the driver amplifier is arranged, the candidate gain values form a geometric sequence. A unit cost can be reduced by halving an area occupied by the driver amplifier.
