A method for identifying barley with good brewing properties using the thermostability of the barley β-amylase as an indicator. The thermostability of the barley β-amylase significantly affects the degree of the apparent attenuation limit. A method for determining the enzyme activity of an extract solution from one barley seed, an indirect method by an isoelectric point, and an indirect identifying method by DNA polymorphisms of the region containing the β-amylase structural gene have been developed as a method for determining the type of thermostability for a barley β-amylase. The selection method is not affected by environmental or climatic conditions.

The object of the present invention is to provide a fermentation product excellent in flavoring quality by a method in which the fermentation time can be reduced and the long-term operation is feasible in producing the fermentation product such as alcoholic beverages in the fluidized-bed reactor. The present invention relates to a process for producing a fermentation product wherein an immobilized microorganism is arranged in a fluidized bed reactor provided with a fluidized bed part, a liquid circulating part and a gas exhaust part, and a raw-material solution is fed to the reactor to conduct fermentation, characterized in that a part of a fermented solution is drawn out from the fluidized bed part and the fermented solution is returned again to the reactor whereby a fluidized bed is formed while fermentation is conducted, and the fermentation product is put out from the reactor while new raw-material solution is fed to the reactor so that the above fermentation is repeatedly carried out.

The present invention provides a method for clone-multiplication of a Paphiopedilum wherein a scape terminal bud or an axillary shoot, whose surface has been sterilized, or an aseptic shoot obtained by an aseptic cultivation, of a Paphiopedilum stock, are cut into cross-sectional pieces which are then cultivated in a medium containing a plant hormone. By cutting an aseptic shoot containing a number of axillary buds into cross-sectional pieces and cultivating, a multishoot formation is feasible. Also by employing a liquid medium containing a solid support such as a rockwool or a paper filter in the culture, the plant death due to browning of tissues can effectively be prevented. In addition, by optimizing the method for sterilizing the buds before blooming, the medium composition and the culture condition, a large scale production of Paphiopedilums by means of a clone multiplication technology becomes feasible.

A medium for microbiological examination prepared by treating medium components containing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) with an acid phosphatase and a method of microbiological examination by using the ATP-luciferase technique with the use of this medium. In a microbiological examination by the ATP-luciferase technique with the use of this medium, the light emission due to the medium is stably suppressed to an extremely low level, which makes it unnecessary to fear measuring troubles due to the light emission by any substance other than microorganisms. The examination method with the use of the medium can be conveniently effected and achieves a high accuracy and a high reliability.

After a suitable foreign gene and a terminator are linked to the promoter, the resulting vector may be introduced into seeds of barley or other plants, thereby intentionally modifying the seeds and making the resulting seeds produce foreign substances therein.

In a filtration equipment with a filtrate recovery process, in order to achieve reduction in recovery time of suspension in a tank and allow sludge such as filtration aid to be exfoliated readily from filtration elements and discharged, pressurized water is introduced into the tank which includes tubular filtration elements and a plate element provided at upper and lower locations thereof to recover the suspension as filtrate, and pressurized gas such as air or carbon dioxide is introduced into the tank from the suspension side so that water remaining on the suspension side is discharged from the tank by the pressurized gas, whereafter sludge is exfoliated from the filtration elements and then discharged to the outside of the tank.
