A method of manufacturing an osteoinductive osteoimplant is provided which comprises the steps of: demineralizing part or all of at least one surface of a monolithic section of cortical bone to a depth of at least about 100 microns; and, configuring the monolithic section of cortical bone to provide an osteoimplant possessing an outer surface possessing at least one demineralized zone and a non-demineralized zone. An implant produced according to the above method demonstrates improved osteoinduction without producing any clinically significant reduction of strength in critical regions of the osteoimplant.

A ramp-shaped intervertebral implant (10) is disclosed. The implant has a body having a first end (16), a second end (14), a top surface (22) and a bottom surface (24). At least one of the top and bottom surfaces is tapered that converges towards the second end of the body. An opening (26) extends through the body, has one end opening onto the top surface of the implant and the other end opening onto the bottom surface of the implant. The implant can be formed from the diaphysis or metaphysis of a long bone, wherein the intramedullary canal of the long bone defines the opening. Alternately, the implant can be made from any biocompatible material having the requisite strength requirement.

An intervertebral implant (50) having a tabbed configuration is provided. The intervertebral implant includes a substantially cylindrical body portion (52), and a pair of radially extending tabs (62, 64). The radially extending tabs may be provided as a single or double pair (66, 68), may assume various shapes, and configurations for engaging the interior of a bore (E) formed between adjacent vertebrae (X, Y). A through bore (60) or plurality of through bores extend from the top surface (58) of the implant to the bottom surface (70) of the implant. The implant may be formed from a cortical ring (C) cut from the diaphysis of a long bone (D) by milling. Alternatively, the implant may be formed of any biocompatible material having the requisite strength requirements via any known process, i.e., molding. There is also disclosed a method of insertion of the implant including forming a stepped bore between adjacent vertebrae, inserting the implant between adjacent vertebrae with tabs in alignment with the spaced defined by the adjacent vertebrae, and rotating the implant such that the tabs are rotated within an enlarged or stepped portion of the bore to secure it therein.

An intervertebral prosthesis includes a bone graft implant member dimensioned for insertion within an intervertebral space defined between adjacent vertebrae and having at least first and second longitudinal sections with respective first and second cross-sectional dimensions. The first cross-sectional dimension of the first implant section is greater than the second cross section dimension of the second implant section to define a stepped region having a retaining surface. Consequently, upon insertion of the implant member within a generally correspondingly dimensioned receiving bed formed within the adjacent vertebrae, the retaining surface facilitates securement therewithin by corresponding engagement with surfaces of the receiving bed. A method for fusion of adjacent vertebrae utilizing the prosthesis is also disclosed.
