A porous membrane is obtained by providing a crosslinked polymer mainly composed of (a) a polymerizable monomer having an acid anhydride or esterified carboxyl group or a monomer having a carboxyl group, (b) divinylbenzene, and optionally (c) a styrene, or (b) and (c), on at least part of the surface of polyolefin (particularly polyethylene or polypropylene) porous membrane, to render the membrane heat-resistant or both heat-resistant and hydrophilic. This membrane is produced by crosslink-polymerizing (a) to (c) on the polyolefin porous membrane under heating, optionally followed by hydrolysis. This porous membrane is useful for membrane separation requiring steam sterilization or membrane separation of high-temperature water.

A molecular separation column is provided for effecting differential distribution, between two phases, of the components of a sample flowing therethrough, said column containing a solid stationary phase which comprises a porous matrix of fiber having particulate immobilized therein, at least one of said fiber or particulate being effective for molecular separation, preferably the particulate, the matrix being substantially i homogeneous with respect to each component. When used in liquid-solid flow-through molecular separations, there is a reduced pressure drop and diffusional resistance so that the columns can be used for commercial scale liquid separations in addition to analytical separations. A method is also provided for effecting molecular separations by the use of such columns as well as providing for a solid phase for use in such columns.

The method comprises: providing a plurality of membrane adsorber cartridges; providing a plurality of valves, communicatively coupled to said plurality of membrane adsorber cartridges; and switching the valves, so as to interconnect said membrane adsorber cartridges to operate in a countercurrent flow mode. The system comprises multiple membrane adsorber cartridges that are interconnected and configured to operate in a countercurrent flow mode. Furthermore, the configuration comprises a valve assembly that allows the cartridges to be subjected to different steps in the process by automatic switching of the valves. In this way, cartridges are recycled many times during the purification of a batch.

The invention relates to a method for qualitative, semi-quantitative or quantitative determination of at least two analytes in an aqueous sample containing or suspected of containing the analytes, which method comprises the steps of: (i) providing a flow matrix comprising a separation zone extending in a first dimension thereof, and a detection zone extending in the first dimension in a spaced parallel relationship with the separation zone, the detection zone comprising an immobilized reagent capable of capturing the analytes through biospecific interaction therewith, (ii) applying the sample to the flow matrix at or upstream of the separation zone, (iii) initiating a first essentially aqueous fluid flow in the flow matrix along the separation zone in the first dimension to transport the analytes through the separation zone to be separated therein, (iv) interrupting the first fluid flow and initiating a second essentially aqueous fluid flow in a second dimension of the flow matrix substantially transverse to the first dimension towards the detection zone to transport the separated analytes to the detection zone to be captured therein by the immobilized reagent, and (vi) determining the analytes in the detection zone. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.
