A system and method to detect a call trigger during a call without requiring a service platform to remain connected to the call. A first communication device (106) transmits a call having call signaling and user communications. A signaling processor (112) receives the call signaling from the first communication device and selects a connection to a second communication device (108). An interworking unit (114) receives the user communications from the first communication device and converts the user communications from a time division multiplex format to asynchronous transfer mode cells that identify a selected connection to the second communication device. The interworking unit detects a call trigger in the user communications. The interworking unit transmits call trigger data to the signaling processor. The signaling processor processes the call trigger data and, upon validating the call trigger, instructs the interworking unit to transport the user communications to asynchronous transfer mode cells that identify the selected connection to the thrid communication device (110) and transports the user communications to the third communication device.

A network element for use in a heterogeneous telecommunications system employs "out of band" signalling to automatically discover the identity of the two ports connecting two network elements through a specific link. Either of the connected network elements may be a circuit switching network element or a packet switching network element. One network element initiates the port discovery process and transmits a SONET/SDH overhead signal to the network element attached at the other end of the link. The-other network element monitors the status of its ports and, when it detects a change in state at one of the ports, resulting from the first network element's transmissions, the receiving, or passive, network element recognizes the port as the port which forms a part of the link of interest.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for monitoring and signaling a path restoration using pre-computed restoration paths following a detected fault on a primary service path in a communications network. A fault occurring inside the restorable portion of a network in heterogeneous or multiple network environments can be distinguished from faults occurring outside the restorable network in accordance with the ANSI Tandem Connection Maintenance standard, T1.105.05-1994. Path restoration is activated only when a fault causing path failure occurs inside the restorable portion of the network. Each conforming node in the restorable portion of the network has the necessary monitoring, signaling and cross-connect functionality and databases to participate actively in real time restoration. Additional non-conforming network elements can be positioned between the restoration nodes without preventing path restoration. With the signaling architecture of the present invention, when an end-node detects a path failure caused by an in-network fault, it formulates a signaling message for restoring the failed path. The restoration signaling message is thereafter relayed from one node to another in the overhead or payload of signaling paths that occupy the same bandwidth that is subsequently used by the restoration path. Once a signaling message is transmitted to an adjacent node in the overhead or payload of a particular signaling path, the node that transmitted the message makes a cross-connect that replaces the signaling path with a segment of the restoration path whose set-up was requested in the transmitted signaling message.

A detector unit (25; 41) for use in the setting up of connections in such a teletransmission network (1) comprises means (32, 33; 43) for detecting on the basis of an identification associated with a given call whether the call is of the first type or of the second type. The detector unit moreover comprises means (34) for setting up calls of the first type via the first transmission path and calls of the second type via the second transmission path.
