The present invention provides an efficient point-to-multipoint microwave ATM network including a base station (BS 205) broadcasting a continuous transmission with a sector antenna (200). The system uses time division multiplex (TDM) for downstream transmission and time division multiple access (TDMA) for upstream transmission. The downstream transmission consists of ATM cells encapsulated in MAC protocol data units (PDUs) for forward error correction (FEC) and synchronization. Small Subscriber Terminals (STs),including Subscriber Radio Units (SRUs 202), receive the broadcast and pass it to a Subscriber Access System (SAS 204) that drops the ATM cells addressed only to them. To allow strong FEC protection and to maintain the same symbol rate as the downstream transmission without sacrificing bandwidth, a modified trellis code modulation technique, which incorporates Reed Solomon coding, is used during upstream transmission.

Die Kalkulation der aktuellen Zeitrahmenlänge basiert beispielsweise auf dem aktuellen Verkehrsaufkommen. In einem Kommunikationssystem mit geringer Verkehrslast werden kurze Zeitrahmen für kurze Zugriffsverzögerungen und kurze Zugriffszeiten verwendet. In einem Kommunikationssystem mit hoher Verkehrslast werden lange Zeitrahmen unter Berücksichtigung einer vorgegebenen maximalen Zeitrahmenlänge verwendet, um zum einen die Fairness zu erhöhen und zum anderen die System Performance zu erhöhen. Es wird ein Ressourcen Zuweisungs- oder Zuteilungs-Algorithmus verwendet, der eine dynamische Zuweisung bzw. Zuteilung von Ressourcen durchführt durch geeignete Wahl der Zeitrahmenlängen. Als Grundeinheit der Ressourcen dient beispielsweise ein Zeitschlitz einer vorgegebenen Länge.

The invention relates to the control of transmission resources in individual transmission paths in a packet-oriented communication network, whereby data-packet address information (A1, A2) which identifies the origin and the goal of the data packets (DP1, DP2), is transmitted to a resource manager (RM), responsible for a transmission path (US), from a network transmission device (R1, R2). On a resource request (RA), for a connection to be subsequently generated, the origin and goal thereof are compared with the origin and goal of the previously transmitted data packets (DP1, DP2) by the resource manager (RM). Should there be agreement, the resource manager (RM) can deduce that the connection to be established can equally run over the corresponding transmission path (US). Correspondingly, establishment of further connections occurs, depending upon the available resources of said transmission path (US).

The invention relates to the selection of a virtual path or virtual channel in response to a connection request in a communications network. To achieve a fast selection of a valid virtual path, the available virtual paths are divided into three categories so that the first category (1) includes virtual paths that were accepted the last time they were tested, the second category (2) includes virtual paths that were rejected the last time they were tested, and the third category (3) includes the rest of the available virtual paths. A virtual path is moved from the second category to the third category according to a predetermined criterion. Virtual paths are tested in order so that first the virtual paths in the first category are tested, then the virtual paths in the third category, and finally the virtual paths in the second category. Virtual channels can be selected in the same way.
