The present invention provides a process for easily producing an alkylene oxide adduct to an aliphatic amine compound which has a fully excellent color, is not turbid, and does not deteriorate in color even through long-term storage. That is, the present invention provides a process for producing an alkylene oxide adduct to a primary or secondary amine compound having an aliphatic, saturated or unsaturated, hydrocarbon radical having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, having an excellent color, by reacting an alkyene oxide to the amine compound, characterized by comprising the step of adding a base or an aqueous solution thereof to the amine compound and then heating the mixture.

The invention provides a process for the production of a 2,3-dihydroxypropylamino compound, said process comprising the reaction steps of: (i) obtaining an allylamino compound; (ii) epoxidizing said allylamino compound to yield an epoxypropylamino compound; and (iii) hydrolysing said epoxypropylamino compound to yield a 2,3-dihydroxypropylamino compound. This process may be used to produce simple 2,3-dihydroxypropylamino compounds such as APD or complex ones such as BAPD (an intermediate in the production of iohexol).

A two-step process for the conversion of a trans-1-amino-2-hydroxycycloalkane stereoselectively to a cis-1-amino-2-hydroxycycloalkane is disclosed. The novel step, a one-step hydrolysis with formal inversion, can be used to convert an amide of a trans-1-amino-2-hydroxycycloalkane to a cis-1-amino-2-hydroxycycloalkane. Methods for obtaining the trans-1-amino-2-hydroxycycloalkanes and their amides from alkenes are also disclosed. A preferred process converts indene to cis-1-amino-2-indanol.

An alpha-1 blocker prepared from this compound has a potent blocking effect and is reduced in the side effect of orthostatic hypotension.

The present invention describes an alternative reaction path for the making of quaternary ammonium esters for fabric softening. The process starts from a chloroepoxide which is reacted with ammonia and water to form a primary amino polyol. The process continues as reductive alkylation of the primary and then secondary amine with aldehydes to provide an intermediate tertiary amino polyol. The first part of the process is followed by the tradtional esterification and quaternisation steps known in the art for making quaternized ammonium fabric softening compounds.
