An orthopaedic prosthesis system for replacement of an articulating portion of a long bone includes a sleeve, a stem, and a neck. The sleeve has an outer bone engagement surface and includes opposed proximal and distal female taper regions. The stem has a distal end for fixation within a long bone and a proximal end including a male taper region engaged with the distal female taper of the sleeve. The neck has a taper post that engages the proximal taper of the sleeve. Both the neck and the sleeve may define axial bores, the axial bore in the sleeve communicating with and being generally coaxial with the two opposed female tapers, and the neck axial bore extending through the taper post. A connecting element can engage the stem, pass through the axial bore in the sleeve, extend into the axial bore in the neck taper post, and engage the neck.

A proximally hollow prosthesis is provided having a cap element and a stem; the prosthesis, in one embodiment, has a cap element suitable to be adapted to a ball and hip socket and has a stem suitable to be implanted in a reamed femoral medullary canal. The stem of the prosthesis has a proximal region and a distal region and is mateable with the cap element of the prosthesis. The proximal region of the stem is open to define a cavity which extends longitudinally a predetermined distance through the proximal region of the stem but not into an isthmus region of the stem, which is located distal to the proximal region of the stem. The distal region of the stem is located distal to the isthmus region of the stem and is made of solid metal or alloys thereof. In another embodiment of the invention, the distal region of the stem is furcated, being at least bifurcated so as to define a plurality of tangs.

The invention concerns a new reticulated orthopaedic element to exploit the endomedullary canal of the long bones, characterized in that it provides at least a part made up of a reticulate of titanium or other biocompatible material. The reticulated structure allows the prosthetic transverse locking without the use of an image intensifier and/or other ionizing diagnostic apparatuses. The prostheses according to the invention can be used for the reduction of long bone fractures to support poweral, femural or knee articulations or to revise previously implanted prostheses that were origins of complications.

The invention concerns a hip-joint prosthesis and its use in hip-joint surgery. The prosthesis consists essentially of a laterally open hollow body of horseshoe-shaped cross-section (31). This permits optimal adaptation to the lines of force transmission. Preferably, the prosthesis consists of a stem (3) in the form of a laterally open hollow body, a more solid neck part (2) and a multidimensionally adjustable head (1) on the neck part. The prosthesis can also be designed as a total implant in the form of a straight-stemmed prosthesis with S-shaped mass distribution.
