Water dispersible fiber products are provided. In one embodiment, a water dispersible fiber sheet is provided and it is preferably formed from regenerated cellulose fibers, a second fiber that is adapted to provide strength to the water dispersible fiber sheet, and a water soluble binder. In use, the fiber sheet can be formed into a variety of products including, for example, for labels, packaging, medical and health care products. The fiber sheet is particularly advantageous in that it is readily dispersible upon contact with water, yet it will retain its strength when used with other fluids, such as alcohol and oils. The biodegradability of the fiber sheet will also allow the fibers to be consumed naturally by environmental bacteria, thus eliminating the need for special disposal procedures. In another embodiment, the water dispersible fiber sheet can be incorporated into a filter media.

A process of the manufacture of porous structures comprises forming a dry mixture comprising a component providing primary separation capability, a component providing green strength reinforcement capability and a component providing binding capability and selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers; delivering the mixture to a suitable surface and building a desired thickness thereof; densifying the mixture into the form desired for the porous structure; removing the densified porous structure from the surface; binding the component providing the primary separation capability by melting the mixture to a temperature of up to about 20 °C higher than the melting point of any thermoplastic component providing binding capability. Porous structures (100, 110, 120, 125, 140, 175) according to the present invention comprise from about 70 to about 90 parts by weight of a component providing primary separation capability (61, 62); from about one to about 15 parts by weight of a component providing green strength reinforcement capability (64, 65); and from about 8 to about 20 parts by weight of a component providing binding capability (67, 68) and selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.

An anti-microbial and/or anti-fungal synthetic fiber that comprises various thermoplastic polymers and additives in a bi-component form in either a core-sheath or side-by-side configurations. The anti-microbial synthetic fibers comprise inorganic anti-microbial additives, distributed in certain areas to reduce the amount of the anti-microbial agents being used, and therefore the cost of such fibers. The fibers can incorporate anti-microbial additives so that they are not removed by repeated washing in boiling water and in dry clean cycles and become ineffective and conversely enhance access to the additives by washing or the like. The fibers comprise high tenacity polymers (e.g. PET) in one portion and hydrolysis resistance polymers (e.g. PCT) in another portion with the additives. The fibers can further be blended with non-anti-microbial fibers such as cotton, wool, polyester, acrylic, nylon etc. to provide anti-microbial finished fabrics. In one embodiment, binder fibers are used which are mixed with other fibers.

The invention relates to a filter material, especially in the form of a deep-bed filter layer, consisting of a supporting layer forming passages, a first type of plastic fibres and a pre-determinable amount of natural fibres. The first type of fibres are embodied as bicomponent fibres comprising a core which has a high melting point and is surrounded by an envelope having a lower melting point. An essentially non-shrinkable, stable filter matrix with reliable connection points can be formed without additional wetting agents or binding agents, due to the fact that the filter material contains a wet-strength agent selected from the group consisting of epichlorohydrine resins and/or melamine formaldehyde resins. Fine deposition processes can thus be carried out with said filter material for fluids, in order to separate tiny particles such as micro-organisms or proteins of liquid solutions.
