A tubular container (10) for vacuum packaging products is provided according to the present invention that includes an overcap (30) secured to at least one of the opposed ends of a tubular container that defines a bias member (35) for biasing a membrane-type flexible lid (20) inwardly towards products contained within the tubular container before a vacuum is applied. The flexible lid is maintained in a biased shape until the bias member is removed. As such, the flexible lid is sufficiently restrained during the vacuum packaging process, thus preventing the breakage of products located adjacent the flexible lid.

The invention provides a container (20) for viscous dressing products that includes ajar (22) and a closure (24) or lid (32). The lid (32) may be hingedly attached to the container (20) so as to remain attached to the jar (22) after opening. The container (20) provides protection for the viscous dressing product during packaging, shipping, handling, retail display and consumer use, and also makes the viscous dressing readily accessible to the consumer. The container (20) preferably includes a shelf or wiper (42) on the closure (24) to permit the consumer to wipe a serving utensil on the shelf (42) to remove excess viscous dressing product from the utensil. The jar (22) is preferably provided with improved handling characteristics as compared with prior art jars of circular cross section. In the preferred embodiments, the shape of the jar (22) as viewed in plan is generally oval.

A method of manufacturing multi-ply tubular containers for food products is provided including the steps of applying an aqueous adhesive to a surface of a paperboard body ply and then heating the aqueous adhesive to evaporate part of the water content and render the adhesive substantially tacky. The body ply and a polymeric liner ply having a moisture barrier layer are then either fed to a shaping mandrel from opposite sides and bonded together as the container is formed on the mandrel or are first passed through a nip to adhere the liner ply to the body ply and then wrapped around the mandrel as a laminate to create the tubular container. Accordingly, an advantageous tubular container can be manufactured having a body ply formed of paperboard which is wrapped into a tubular shape to define an inner surface. The body ply defines a predetermined circumferential length before being wrapped which corresponds to one revolution of the body ply when wrapped in a tubular shape. A polymeric liner ply is adhered to the inner surface of the body ply and defines a circumferential length equal to that of the body ply prior to being wrapped. Accordingly, the liner ply is circumferentially compressed when the body ply is wrapped into the tubular shape and advantageously has a wrinkled surface finish after being wrapped which is caused by the circumferential compression of the liner ply. Another feature of the invention is a sealed composite container having an end seal formed by a pair of inner and outer beads of a heat flowable polymer forming a part of the liner and membrane-type lid.

A bottle is formed from a moulded plastics body and an injection moulded neck and cap assembly which can be fused to the body after the body has been filled with a fluid. The body may be provided with a relatively wide mouth to enhance the filling speed. The bottle is particularly suitable for blow moulding in a plant adjacent to a dairy where it will be subsequently filled with a fluid and fused to a pre-sealed neck and cap assembly in a single continuous operation. A foil (70) is interposed between the body and the neck and cap assembly. The neck comprises a base (20) fitted to the body with a removable annular flange (30) connected to a pull ring (42) and secured to the foil (70). A frangible region (32) separates the removable annular flange (30) from the base (20). A plurality of depending teeth (36) each having a saw tooth profile inclined inwardly to a centre of the base are formed in the base adjacent to or in the frangible region (32) such that on removal of the pull ring (42) the foil (70) is torn by the teeth. The base may be provided with a weakened annular recess (48) that is concealed by a skirt (58) of a cap (50) when the closure is sealed. This recess (48) causes the base to break and the cap closure to be destroyed if any attempt is made to prise the base (20) from the mouth (6) of the bottle. This provides tamper evidence by destruction of the closure.
