A filter catalyst of the present invention is comprised of a catalyst-supporting substrate 1, and catalytic portions 5, 6 for purifying an exhaust gas. The catalytic portions includes the first catalytic portion 5 for purifying HC, CO and NO x , and the second catalytic portion 6 for purifying the particulates. The first catalytic portion 5 is formed on a surface of at least a portion of the cellular wall 40, and the second catalytic portion 6 is formed on an inside surface of the pores. In the filter catalyst of the present invention purifying ability of the exhaust gas is increased, and the filter catalyst of the present invention can suppress rise of the pressure loss of the exhaust gas.

On a downstream portion of the passage, the component (ii) includes at least one of a Ce oxide and a ZrCe mixed oxide in which an oxide equivalent weight of Ce is within a range of 58·100 wt% of an oxide equivalent weight of Zr and Ce contained in the ZrCe mixed oxide.

With respect to an oxide powder having a characteristic that a suspension suspending the oxide powder in pure water exhibits a pH value of 7 or less, a noble metal is loaded on the oxide powder by using a noble metal salt solution exhibiting a pH value lower than the pH value of the suspension in order to inhibit the granular growth of loaded noble metal particles at high temperatures. It is believed that the affinity enlarges between noble metal particles, generated by the decomposition of the noble metal salt, and the oxide powder because no coarse noble metal particles are generated by neutralizing the noble metal salt so that the binding force enlarges between the oxide powder and the noble metal salt.

The honeycomb-shaped supports include a first honeycomb-shaped support, disposed on a most upstream side of the mantle with respect to a flow of exhaust gases, and a second honeycomb-shaped support, disposed next to the first honeycomb-shaped support on a downstream side of the mantle with respect to the flow of exhaust gases. The catalytic layer includes a loading layer formed on the respective honeycomb-shaped supports, and a catalytic ingredient loaded on the loading layer. The catalytic layer disposed on the first honeycomb-shaped support includes at least Rh in a loading amount of 0.8 g or more with respect to 1 L of an apparent volume of the first honeycomb-shaped support.
