Embodiments herein are related to hydrophilic open cell foams with particulate fillers. In an embodiment, an article is provided that has an open cell foam structure including a hydrophilic polymer and about 0.1 wt. % to about 40.0 wt. % of a particulate filler dispersed within the hydrophilic polymer. The open cell foam structure can exhibit a rate of absorption of water greater than an otherwise identical foam lacking the particulate filler. Other embodiments are included herein.

An improved process for forming a PTFE mat is described. The process includes providing a dispersion with PTFE, a fiberizing polymer and a solvent wherein said dispersion has a viscosity of at least 50,000 cP. An apparatus is provided which comprises a charge source and a target a distance from the charge source. A voltage source is provided which creates a first charge at the charge source and an opposing charge at the target. The dispersion is electrostatically charged by contact with the charge source. The electrostatically charged dispersion is collected on the target to form a mat precursor which is heated to remove the solvent and the fiberizing polymer thereby forming the PTFE mat.

Foamed polypropylene-resin particles are obtained by dispersing polypropylene-resin particles containing polyethylene glycol and/or glycerin together with an aqueous dispersion medium in a pressure-resistant container; introducing carbon dioxide gas as a foaming agent into the pressure-resistant container; impregnating the polypropylene-resin particles with the foaming agent under a heating and pressure condition; and then discharging the polypropylene-resin particles into an area having a lower pressure than an internal pressure of the pressure-resistant container and having an atmosphere temperature of higher than 80°C and not higher than 110°C. The foamed polypropylene-resin particles can yield an in-mold foam molded body at a low heated water vapor pressure for molding, do not lose moldability at a high heated water vapor pressure for molding, have a wide heated water vapor range for molding, exhibit good moldability even when a mold with a complicated shape, a large mold, or a similar mold is used.

The present invention provides for a biochemically and physically defined extracellular microenvironment prepared from mussel adhesive proteins recombinantly functionalized with a variety of bioactive peptides such as extracellular matrix-derived or growth factor-derived peptides. The synthetic extracellular microenvironment can be customized to regulate cellular behavior such as cell adhesion, growth, differentiation and morphogenesis in a variety of cells. The invention provides for a modulatory extracellular microenvironment by presenting a matricryptic site into said mussel adhesive proteins. The invention also provides for devices and methods for screening for optimal combinations of ECM derived peptide motifs in order to create a microenvironment that can regulate specific cellular behavior.
