Connections can comprise phone calls, and modes can comprise push and Bluetooth® messaging. The connection manager can instruct device outputs to provide connection alerts, limited to visual alerts when an associated user device is active, listen for associated user device communications, and instruct device outputs to stop providing alerts when a silencing command is received. Further, a connection manager can receive a signal regarding a headset status, route an outside connection from a phone to the headset when the headset is active or to another device when the headset is not active, detect a change in headset status, and reroute the connection accordingly.

A client-server telephone call router system as part of a customer premises system has a client-server router adapted to execute on a telephony switch, such as a public branch exchange (PBX) or other telephony switch, or on a processor connected by CTI link to a telephony switch. The telephony switch or processor executing the router is connected to a local area network (LAN) that also interconnects computer workstations proximate to telephones connected to the telephony switch. Client user interface applications run on the computer workstations, allowing clients to edit routing rules for the router, which has a list of routing rules keyed to users and workstations of the customer premises system. The editing rules are kept by the router in portions dedicated to individual users. With this system a user can edit at a workstation on the LAN his/her own routing rules, and transmit the edits to the client-server router where the rules will be followed to route calls for that user and protocol.

Feature control signaling can be transported from a handset to a network-based service platform when the handset is active on an existing call, using three-way calling and Intelligent Network (IN) capabilities to pass feature control information from the user device to a network-based service platform. Although Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) standards do not support mid-call triggers, handset emulation of three-way-calling (3WC) behavior allows a handset to send a digit string (representing a particular feature-related event) to a network-based service platform (in the context of a pseudo-3WC). Mid-call communications can be accomplished in this manner, allowing a network-based service platform to interpret and take action based on the received digit string, prior to releasing the additional call leg associated with the pseudo-3WC attempt. WIN mechanisms can also be used to send feature control signals from a network-based service platform to a handset. These mechanisms can be used to promote consistent service offerings for users who are served by networks that are comprised of different technologies. These mechanisms can also be used to help operators transition their networks to support emerging network technologies.

The invention provides for the automatic control of features, especially of a call diversion feature, of a communications system according to the position (POS) of a mobile terminal (ME). The mobile terminal (ME) can be treated to a certain extent as an indicator of the position of a user carrying said mobile terminal (ME) with him/her. The position (POS) of the mobile terminal (ME) is determined by means of a global positioning system (GPS) of the mobile terminal (ME) and is compared with a stored reference position (RPOS). One or more features of the communications system are then controlled according to the results of this comparison.
