A papermaking belt (10) comprising a reinforcing structure (33) and a framework (32). The reinforcing structure (33) has air permeability not less than 800 cfm and a Fiber Support Index not less than 75. The framework (32) is joined to the reinforcing structure (33) and extends outwardly not more than about 6.5 mils from the reinforcing structure (33). The framework (32) has deflection conduits (36) dispersed throughout, encompassed by, and isolated one from another by the framework (32). A paper-contacting surface (11) of the framework (32) comprises a paper-side network (34a) which encompasses paper-side openings (42) of the deflection conduits (36). A substantial portion of each paper-side opening (42) is not less than about 45 mils in each of its dimensions measured in the X-Y plane. A paper web (80) having two regions: an essentially continuous and macroscopically monoplanar network region (83), and a dome region (84) comprising a plurality of discrete domes encompassed by the network region. The domes are distributed in a nonrandom, repeating pattern. A substantial portion of each dome is greater than about 45 mils in each of its dimensions measured in the X-Y plane. The density of the network region (83) is greater than the density of the dome region (84).

A porous mesh for use in forming articles comprising a network of pores and protrusions. The porous mesh has a specifically delineated mesh structure having a pore/protrusion size between 25 and 1500 microns and the pore structure is based on a uniform distribution of pores and protrusions on a cast or molded sheet wherein said pores and protrusions have similar effective diameters. The resulting material is advantageously applied to several bio-medical applications, including reconstructive surgery and arterial replacement.

This invention provides a method of making an abrasive article. The method of this invention comprises the steps of: a) providing a backing having a front surface; b) providing a radiation energy transmissive production tool having a contacting surface; c) applying a mixture comprising a plurality of abrasive particles and a binder precursor onto the contacting surface of the production tool; d) causing the mixture on the contacting surface of the production tool to come into contact with the front surface of the backing such that the mixture wets the front surface of the backing; e) transmitting radiation energy through the production tool to at least partially cure the binder precursor to form a shaped, handleable structure; and f) separating the shaped, handleable structure from the production tool. The shaped, handleable structure can be fully cured to form a coated abrasive article.

A description is given of a method and a device (1) for providing (replicating) a patterned resyntetic resin relief (37) on the surface (25) of a glass substrate (27). For this purpose, a UV-curable acrylate lacquer (33) is applied to the surface (25), after which a transparent mould (3) having a relief (13) is rolled-off over the surface (25). By means of a UV light source (17) and an elliptic mirror (21), the lacquer is cured at the location of the focal line (23), thereby forming said relief (37). The relief (13) of the mould (3) is replicated on the glass substrate (27). The method described enables a relief of small dimensions (10 x 10 µm) to be seamlessly provided on a large flat surface (1 x 1 m), without being hindered by large release forces.

Solution in which a hydrophobic high molecular compound and a catechol group-containing compound are dissolved in solvent is cast, to form cast film (24). Dew is condensed on an uncovered surface of the cast film (24). The solvent and water droplets upon the condensation are evaporated from the cast film (24), to produce porous film (11). The porous film (11) has a honeycomb structure in which plural pores (12) are formed in one film surface. The pores (12) are in a substantially equal shape and size, and are arranged regularly at a constant pitch. The film surface on a side having the pores (12) of the porous film (11) is a functional surface (13) having an adhesive property.
