The embodiments of the present invention provide a novel method for forming a loop member of a hook-and-loop fastener assembly. According to one embodiment, the method comprises continuously providing a plurality of yarns (20) in a predetermined pattern; plastically deforming the yarns (20) into a desired loop shape; continuously providing a web of substrate (30); and directly securing the yarns (20) that have been plastically deformed into a desired loop shape to the substrate (30) with a bonding process, thereby a loop member of a hook-and-loop fastener assembly having both a high fastening strength and a high engagement stability may be manufactured speedily, massively and at a low cost. The embodiments of the present invention also provide an apparatus (10; 100; 200; 300) for performing the method.

The tensioning structure (3) is formed by connecting a pair of plastic strips sheets (31) via spaced-apart strands (32), such as strings or wires. When pulled taut, the strands (32) provide a high tensile strength between the two opposed plastic strips (31). The assembly has a bonded joint monitored for bond integrity and comprises first (1) and second (2) components each defining a bonding surface (3,4); the joint (5) is formed between the bonding surfaces (3,4) and the first component (1) defines a passage (15) therethrough from the bonding surface to an exterior of the component. The joint (5) includes an optical fibre (11) extending along the joint (5) between the bonding surfaces, through the passage (15) and emerging from the passage (15) to the exterior of the component. The method of constructing the assembly includes the steps of passing the optical fibre (11) through the passage (15) and adhering the optical fibre (11) to the bonding surface (3) of the first component (1), thus bringing the two bonding surfaces (3,4) together and forming the bond (5).
