The invention relates to glass articles suitable for use as electronic device housing/ enclosure or protective cover which comprise a glass material. Particularly, a housing/enclosure/cover comprising an ion-exchanged glass exhibiting the following attributes (1) radio, and microwave frequency transparency, as defined by a loss tangent of less than 0.03 and at a frequency range of between 15 MHz to 3.0 GHz; (2) infrared transparency; (3) a fracture toughness of greater than 0.6 MPa?m ½ ; (4) a 4-point bend strength of greater than 350 MPa; (5) a Vickers hardness of at least 450 kgf/mm 2 and a Vickers median/radial crack initiation threshold of at least 5 kgf; (6) a Young's Modulus ranging between about 50 to 100 GPa;; (7) a thermal conductivity of less than 2.0 W/m°C, and (9) and at least one of the following attributes: (i) a compressive surface layer having a depth of layer (DOL) greater and a compressive stress greater than 400 MPa, or, (ii) a central tension of more than 20 MPa.

The invention concerns a method for making a glass frit for confining by vitrification a substance comprising at least one oxidizable or reducible chemical species, as well as a method for confining by vitrification said substance. The method for making a glass frit includes a step of incorporating in a raw glass frit an oxidoreduction couple whereof the type and the amount enable said at least one chemical species to be maintained in its oxidized or reduced state. The confining method includes mixing and hot melting the resulting glass frit and the substance to be confined. The invention enables the confinement of pollutants such as radionuclides, metals and metalloids to be optimized. The substance may be nuclear waste or a material derived from incineration of household refuse.

Further, the invention relates to a manufacturing method comprising providing a glass powder comprising a transition metal oxide compound; combining the glass powder with abrasive grains comprising cubic boron nitride; forming the glass powder and abrasive grains to form a green article; and sintering the green article at a transformation temperature to form abrasive grains in a vitreous bond matrix, the transformation temperature changing the transition metal oxide compound to a transition metal nitride compound at the interface of the abrasive grams and the vitreous bond matrix.

The average aspect ratio is obtained by dividing the average particle diameter by the average thickness. The particle diameter distribution index of the glass flakes is 5.0 or less. The particle diameter distribution index is obtained by dividing D90 by D10, where in the particle size distribution of the glass flakes, D10 is a particle diameter at which the cumulative mass distribution of particle diameters reaches 10% when counted from the smaller side, and D90 is a particle diameter at which the cumulative mass distribution of particle diameters reaches 90% when counted from the smaller side.
