The hydraulic motor is provided with a mechanical brake device (15) having a brake release cylinder (19) adapted to release the rotary shaft (3a) of the motor from the braking by the mechanical brake device by supply of a hydraulic fluid to the brake re- leasa cylinder. The apparatus further has an auxiliary hydraulic pump (31; 56) and a control circuit (32; 57; 61) connected to the auxiliary pump, brake release cylinder (19) and reservoir (17) for control of fluid communication there- between. The control circuit includes a hydraulic fluid supply line (31a; 56a) for receiving a hydraulic fluid supplied from the auxiliary hydraulic pump, a first line (33; 62) connected between the hydraulic fluid supply line and the brake release cylinder, and a second line (34) connected between the hydraulic fluid supply line and the reservoir. The second line is associated with the directional control valve (9; 41) such that when the valve is in a neutral position, the hydraulic fluid supply line is brought into communication with the reservoir to thereby disable a hydraulic fluid from the supply line from being supplied to the brake release cylinder through the first line (33; 62), while when the valve is actuated, such communication is interrupted to thereby enable the hydraulic fluid from the supply line to the supplied to the brake release cylinder through the first line (33; 62).
