Dans un élément de compensation fait par exemple en un acier à tremper, on décarbonise, avant la trempe et à l'endroit où le changement de tolérances se manifeste lors du rodage, l'élément de compensation jusqu'à une profondeur suffisante, de façon que la dureté obtenue par la trempe est inférieure à cet endroit. Ce procédé est particulièrement utile dans un régulateur mécanique, tel que la vis de réglage de pleine charge d'une pompe à injection Diesel.
