A system and method for sharing a communications link between multiple protocols is described. A system includes a communications interface configured to exchange information with other systems using at least one of a plurality of protocols; a protocol select register that stores a value that selects a protocol from among the plurality of protocols to become an active protocol; and a state machine accessible to the communications interface, the state machine used to control the exchange of information through the communications interface according to the active protocol. The active protocol is used by the communications interface to exchange information while the remaining protocols of the plurality of protocols remain inactive. The state machine sequences through a series of states that cause the communications interface to operate according to the active protocol, and that are designated as inert sequences under the remaining protocols.

A monitoring control device which tests integrated circuits which are mounted on a CPU substrate (4) or control substrate (5) and support a boundary scan test method and also tests the connecting relations of the integrated circuit by means of a boundary scan controller substrate (7) as shown in the figure. When the abnormality of the CPU substrate (4) or control substrate (5) is found, the device actuates an alarm device (9) to issue an alarm. In addition, when the abnormality gives a serious influence on the operation of a robot (3) to be monitored and controlled, the device prevents the robot from running out of control by turning off the main power unit (6) of the robot (2) from the fail-safe point of view.

A processor, scan controller, and method for protecting sensitive information from electronic hacking is disclosed. To maintain the security of the sensitive data present in a processor, the scan controller denies access to the scan chain until data is cleared from scan-observable portions of the processor, then clears the scan chain again prior to exiting test mode and resuming normal operation. Clearing or otherwise modifying data stored in the scan-observable portions of a processor when transitioning to and/or from a test mode will prevent unauthorized personnel from simply shifting secure data out of the scan chain, and from pre-loading data into the scan chain prior to normal operation in an attempt to set sensitive state information.

A method and apparatus for using weighted random patterns in a partial scan test. A computer generates deterministic patterns (304) on the partial scan design. Deterministic patterns that have the same number of capture clocks between adjacent scan loads are grouped together into pattern groups (308). A computer then determines a set of weights corresponding to each of the pattern groups (312). A tester then uses these weights as a filter to weighted random test patterns and applies these filtered weighted random test patterns along with the appropriate number of capture clock pulses to a device under test.
