    摘要: An apparatus and method for sealing cartridges (24) used in liquid chromatography. Such cartridges (24) are commonly filled with media beds (28) that are bounded axially by porous plates (30). The invention involves one or two sealing heads (2). Each sealing head (2) includes two slidably connected head pieces (4, 18) and an elastomeric sealing member (22). The head pieces (4, 18) and the elastomeric sealing member (22) are sized to slide easily into an open end of a cartridge (24) when the elastomeric sealing member (22) is uncompressed. After insertion, relative movement of the head pieces (4, 18) compresses the elastomeric sealing member (22) and causes the elastomeric sealing member (22) to expand laterally so that it forms a seal against the cartridge (24), when the sealing head (2) is pressed against the media (28) or porous plate (30). An alternate sealing head comprises a plurality of head pieces and a plurality of annular sealing members. One of the head pieces contains a body portion on which the other head pieces and the sealing members are slidably mounted.

A clamp is circumferentially located about the cartridge wall for applying a radial load through the wall to the first end cap to fix the first end cap in a desired position.
