A method for configuring a solar hydrogen generation system and the system optimization are disclosed. The system utilizes photovoltaic modules and an electrolyte solution to efficiently split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The efficiency of solar powered electrolysis of water is optimized by matching the most efficient voltage generated by photovoltaic cells to the most efficient input voltage required by the electrolysis cell(s). Optimizing PV-electrolysis systems makes solar powered hydrogen generation cheaper and more practical for use as an environmentally clean alternative fuel.

The silver-nickel coating is a silver-nickel nano-composite material characterized by silver and nickel grains having an average grain size of about five to about fifty nanometers, yielding a silver-rich phase and a harder nickel-rich phase as a result of silver and nickel being immiscible. In accordance with this invention, the volume fraction of nickel significantly influences the fretting wear resistance of the coating, with a preferred nickel content being resulting in the presence of disconnected islands of the nickel phase dispersed within a relatively softer silver matrix.

A nut (24) is disposed about the drive screw and is linearly translatable in response to rotation of the drive screw. The nut carries a cam follower (38) which travels within a cam track (36). Linear translation of the nut is altered by tracking of the cam following within the cam track such that rotation of the nut is effected simultaneously with rotation of the drive screw resulting in an effective variable pitch of the variable screw-driven system wherein linear translation of the nut results from both rotation of the drive screw and rotation of the nut.

In a distributed management apparatus for a battery pack, a battery monitoring module (12) for each individual battery (11) comprises a microcomputer and apparatus for bi-directional communication with a central control. Each microcomputer is provided with memory and its own control program, which allow sophisticated data gathering, communication and bypass control functions to be performed by each battery monitoring module (12) independently of the central control, although still at its command, for more efficient control design and more flexible and capable system operation. In a preferred embodiment, each battery monitoring module (12) may further comprise voltage and temperature measuring circuits with inputs to the microcomputer and a bypass circuit incorporating the microcomputer itself. All the battery monitoring modules (12) are linked with an interface module (13) by a minimal element, common digital communication circuit for bi-directional communication between each of the battery monitoring modules and the central control. Each battery monitoring module (12) may provide bypass activation alternatively, as commanded by the central control, in a timer mode, in which the bypass path is activated for a commanded time, or a voltage mode, in which the bypass path is activated when the battery voltage equals a commanded value.
