Disclosed herein is solid polymer electrolyte composition comprising solid polymer electrolyte (1) and at least one metal catalyst selected from the group consisting of platinum, gold, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium contained in the said solid polymer electrolyte. The said composition may further contain a metal oxide. The membrane made of the composition possesses the abilities of producing water by itself and of retaining the water so that the ionic conductivity and the effect of depressing the crossover is excellent. Accordingly, the cell employing the membrane possesses superior cell performance.

A solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell which contains a catalyst impregnated layer (7) in an ion exchange membrane (3) which is electrically isolated but ion conductive. In place of the catalyst layer, catalyst particles (29) existing in an anode and/or a cathode may be employed. The catalyst layer and the catalyst particles are attributable to the prevention of the lowering of a cell voltage and the employment of an inexpensive hydrocarbon ion exchange membrane and of a thin membrane.

Disclosed are processes of preparing an electrode for a fuel cell which comprises impregnating catalyst particles with a solution of ion exchange resin to form, after drying, a thin layer of the ion exchange resin on the surface thereof, impregnating non-catalyst particles separately prepared with a solution of ion exchange resin to form, after drying, a thicker layer of the ion exchange resin on the surface thereof than that on the catalyst particle surface, mixing the two kinds of particles coated with the ion exchange resin film with a hydrophobic binder, forming a sheet-like catalyst layer by means of hot pressing or cold pressing and thermally bonding this sheet-like catalyst layer and an ion exchange membrane under pressure. The last thermal bonding step may be simultaneously carried out with the previous catalyst layer forming step.

Disclosed herein is a process for preparing hydrophobic material comprises applying a hydrocarbonous polymer compound solution to the surface of material to be treated, vaporizing the solvent of the solution, and then fluorizing the polymer compound to coat the surface of the material to be treated with the fluorized polymer compound. According to the present invention, the hydrophobic material of which almost all the surface is coated with the fluorized coating layer is obtained through a relatively simple operation. The material possesses the excellent ability of gas supply and the durability for a long period of time.

Disclosed herein is a gas permeable electrode which comprises a gas permeable layer and a reaction layer, the reaction layer comprising hydrophobic portions and hydrophilic portions. Electrolyte penetrates into the reaction layer and does not penetrate into the gas permeable layer, and only the gas produced on the electrode and the gas supplied penetrate into the gas permeable layer. The gas can be released from the rear side of the electrode and the reaction surface thereof never be covered with the gas.
