The invention relates to a flame retardant containing a) at least one sulphur compound of formula (I), A1-( Z1)m- (S)n- (Z2)p- A2 (l) wherein the symbols and indices have the following meanings, A1, A2 are both or independently of one another C6-C12 aryl, cyclohexyl, Si(ORa)3, a saturated, partially unsaturated or aromatic, monocyclic or bicyclic ring having 3 to 12 ring members which contains one or more heteroatoms from the group N, O and S, and is unsubstituted or is substituted by one or more substituents of the group O, OH, S, SH, COORb, CONRcRd, C1-C18 alkyl, C1-C18 alkoxy, C1-C18 thioalkyl, C6-C12 aryl, C6-C12 aryloxy, C2-C18 alkenyl, C2-C18 alkenoxy, C2-C18 alkinyl and C2-C18 alkinoxy; Z1, Z2 are both or independently of one another -CO- or -CS-; Ra is C1-C18 alkyl; Rb, Rc, Rd are both or independently of one another H, C1-C18 alkyl, C6-C12 aryl or an aromatic, monocyclic or bicyclic ring having 3 to 12 ring members which contains one or more heteroatoms from the group N, O and S; m, p are both or independently of one another 0 or 1 and n is a natural number from 2 to 10, and b) at least one halogen-free organic phosphorus compound having a phosphorus content in the range from 5 to 80 wt %, based on the phosphorus compound, is suitable in particular for protection of foams based on styrene polymers.

The invention relates to expandable granules, containing A) a polymer matrix consisting of A1) at least 55 wt % of polyamide (based on the sum of components A1) and A2)) having crystallinity of up to 30%, optionally a melting temperature in the range of 100 to 340ºC, and a glass transition temperature in the range of 0 to 150ºC, and A2) 0 to 45 wt % of one or more thermoplastic polymers different from component A1); B) a physical blowing agent component and optionally further additives, wherein said expandable granules are suitable for producing a particulate foam for use in the automotive industry, aviation industry, building industry, packaging industry, sports and recreation industry, in transportation and/or in construction.

Producing expandable polylactic acid-containing granules, comprises: (a) melting and mixing (i) polylactic acid, (ii) at least one additional polymer, (iii) a diepoxide or polyepoxide and (iv) at least one additive, preferably nucleating agent; (b) mixing (v) an organic blowing agent and (vi) a co-blowing agent including nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and/or helium, into the polymer melt via a static or dynamic mixer; (c) discharging the mixture via a nozzle plate with holes; and (d) granulating the blowing agent-containing melt directly behind the nozzle plate under water. Producing expandable polylactic acid-containing granules, comprises: (a) melting and mixing (i) polylactic acid (50-99.9 wt.%, based on the total weight of the components (i)-(iii)), (ii) at least one additional polymer (0-49.9 wt.%, based on the total weight of the components (i)-(iii)), (iii) a diepoxide or polyepoxide (0.1-2 wt.%, based on the total weight of the components (i)-(iii)) and (iv) at least one additive, preferably nucleating agent (0-10 wt.%, based on the total weight of the components (i)-(iii)); (b) mixing (v) an organic blowing agent (3-7 wt.%, preferably 1-7 wt.%, based on the total weight of the components (i)-(iv)) and (vi) a co-blowing agent including nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and/or helium (0.01-5 wt.%), into the polymer melt via a static or dynamic mixer at a temperature of at least 140[deg] C; (c) discharging the mixture via a nozzle plate with holes, whose diameter at the nozzle outlet is not > 1.5 mm; and (d) granulating the blowing agent-containing melt directly behind the nozzle plate under water at a pressure of 1-20 bar. Disclosed are expandable thermoplastic polymer particles composed of a polyphase polymer mixture that contains a blowing agent and has at least one continuous thermoplastic polymer phase, within which at least two different dispersed phases P1 and P2 are distributed. Also disclosed are methods for producing said particles and the use thereof for making elastic molded particle foam articles.
