摘要: Textured superstrates for photovoltaic cells, for example, silicon tandem photovoltaic cells with light scattering properties which are sufficient for light trapping independent of wavelength are described herein. Features of a textured surface of a superstrate, via the method(s) used to make the textured superstrate, can be tailored to provide the desired light scattering/trapping properties. The method includes grinding and lapping or grinding, lapping, and etching of a glass superstrate.

摘要: A lens array and a method for fabricating a lens array that is relatively flat and has useful lenses with relatively uniform sag heights are described herein. In one embodiment, the lens array includes a one-dimensional array of useful lenses and two sacrificial lenses each of which is formed next to an end of a row of the useful lenses to help maintain relatively uniform sag heights across the useful lenses. In another embodiment, the lens array includes a two-dimensional array of useful lenses and a plurality of perimeter lenses each of which is formed next to an end of a row or a column of the useful lenses to help maintain relatively uniform sag heights across the useful lenses. In yet another embodiment, the lens array includes an array of useful lenses and a glass region (including possibly a glass matrix) located within an opal border and outside an opal region that surrounds the useful lenses to help minimize warpage of the lens array. In fact, there are many different embodiments of the lens array described herein that incorporate one or more of the aforementioned features.

摘要: A gain medium for use in optical amplifiers or laser oscillators is disclosed. The gain medium includes a transition-metal doped glass-ceramic material having a crystal phase and a glass phase. The crystal phase is formed in situ in the glass phase, with the transition metal ions preferentially partitioning into the crystalline sites from the glass phase. The crystalline sites so formed have a size of less than 50 nm, and the transition metal ions within them are capable of lasing at a wavelength within the range of about 900 to 3000 nm. Also disclosed are amplifier and laser oscillator configurations, where the glass-ceramic gain medium is applied in a variety of configurations. Also disclosed is a method of amplifying a signal of light wherein the glass-ceramic gain medium is pumped with light energy so as to excite the transition metal ions, and the signal of light is transmitted through the gain medium while the transition metal ions are excited, whereby the signal of light is amplified. Also disclosed is a method of producing laser oscillation wherein the glass-ceramic gain medium is included in a laser cavity, pumped with optical energy to excite the transition metal ions, and the resulting radiation is forced to oscillate by the use of reflecting surfaces for feedback.

摘要: Disclosed is a photonic band-gap crystal waveguide having the physical dimension of the photonic crystal lattice and the size of the defect (12, 20) selected to provide for optimum mode power confinement to the defect. The defect (12, 20) has a boundary which has a characteristic numerical value associated with it. The ratio of this numerical value to the pitch (4) of the photonic crystal is selected to avoid surface modes found to exist in certain configurations of the photonic band-gap crystal waveguide. Embodiments in accord with the invention having circular and hexagonal defect cross sections are disclosed and described. A method of making the photonic band-gap crystal waveguide is also disclosed and described.
