A process for cooxidizing organic compounds which comprises, in the presence of an imide compound such as N-hydroxyphthalimide, oxidizing with molecular oxygen a compound (A) which is selected from among (A1) compounds having nonaromatic ethylenic linkage and (A2) ketones or alcohols corresponding to the ketones and a compound (B) which can be oxidized by the above imide compound with oxygen and is different from the above compound (A). As the compound (B), use can be made of (a) primary or secondary alcohols (benzhydrol, cyclohexanol, etc.), and (b) compounds having a carbon-hydrogen bond adjacent to an unsaturated bond (tetralin, ethylbenzene, etc.). Use of this process makes it possible to obtain the corresponding epoxy compounds from (A1) compounds having nonaromatic ethylenic linkage, and the corresponding esters or lactones from (A2) ketones or alcohols corresponding to the ketones, each at a high yield.

As the 1,2-dicarbonyl compound or its hydroxy-reduction derivative (A), use may be made of biacetyl, 2,3-butanediol, etc. As the metal compounds (c1), use may be made of a cobalt compound such as cobalt acetate. An acyl group can be efficiently introduced into a methine carbon atom by treating a compound carrying a methine carbon atom such as an adamantane derivative by the above acylating agent.

A process for producing dicarboxylic acids by oxidative cleavage of cycloalkanes with oxygen, characterized in that the oxidative cleavage is conducted in the presence of a catalyst constituted of both an imido compound having a cyclic imide skeleton represented by the general formula (I): (I) [wherein X is oxygen or OR (wherein R is hydrogen or a hydroxyl-protecting group)] and a metal compound at a temperature of 80 °C or above in a reaction system having a cycloalkane concentration of 21 wt% or above. The imido compound is N-hydroxyphthalimide or the like, and is used in an amount of about 0.000001 to 0.01 mol per mol of the cycloalkane. In producing dicalboxylic acids by catalytic oxygenation of cycloalkanes, this process attains high space time yield even with a reduced amount of a catalyst.
