wherein:

R 1 represents an alkyl group having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms;
Y represents a group of formula -O-, -COO- or -OCO-;
m and s each represent an integer of 0 or 1;
R 2 represents an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms optionally substituted by halogen atoms;
Ar represents a group chosen from:

X represents a group of formula -COO- or -OCO-; and
Z represents a group chosen from:

wherein q represents an integer of from 1 to 5, t represents an integer of from 0 to 5, ℓ represents an integer of 1 or 2, u represents an integer of 0 or 1 and * indicates an asymmetric carbon atom;
provided that, when u is an integer of 0, R 2 represents an optically active alkyl or alkoxyalkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms optionally substituted by halogen atoms;
a process for producing said derivatives and the use of said derivatives in the preparation of liquid crystal compositions.
