Sets of injection holes are provided in the fuel injection nozzle (12). Each set of the injection holes is composed of injection holes (32), and the direction of the openings of the injection holes (32) of each set intersect at least the axis of the fuel injection nozzle (12) at a plurality of points. The shape of an opening of a combustion chamber of the piston (11) is formed as a polygon having five or more sides. The output of the diesel engine is increased, noise is reduced, and the amount of hydrocarbon in exhaust gases is reduced.

Accordingly, with regard to the diesel engine, engine output is improved, and noise and hydrocarbon in discharged gas are reduced.
