    摘要: The present invention provides: (i) a method of and apparatus for depositing material, preferably a film, on a substrate, the method comprising the steps of: providing a substrate; heating the substrate (5); generating an aerosol comprising droplets of a material solution; providing a nozzle unit (11) for delivering the aerosol to the substrate, the nozzle unit including at least one outlet (18) through which a directed flow of the aerosol is delivered and at least one electrode (21); charging the aerosol droplets with a positive or negative charge; providing a flow of the aerosol through the nozzle unit so as to deliver a directed flow of the aerosol from the at least one outlet; and generating an electric field between the substrate and the at least one electrode such that the directed aerosol flow is attracted towards the substrate; and (ii) a method of and apparatus for fabricating a powder, preferably an ultrafine powder, the method comprising the above steps but where the aerosol droplets react homogeneously in the gas phase to form a powder.

    摘要: An ultrasound scanning technique for biological tissue examines the radio frequency signals derived from reflected ultrasonic energy to identify signal parameters indicative of particular tissue histology. Such identification is then used to produce a histological image of the biological tissue. The technique is particularly useful in the examination of blood vessels to identify different types of plaque within the vessel wall. Lipid plaques produce relatively low levels of reflection. Calcified plaques produce high levels of regular reflection. Fibrous plaques may be identified as a highly homogeneous thickened wall area that does not show the characteristics of a lipid plaque. A homogeneity value for the radio frequency signal is calculated for all areas not identified as lipid plaques or calcified plaques and then this homogeneity value is mapped to a colour that is displayed within the histological image.

    摘要: A screening system for screening items, such as aircraft-hold luggage, uses a conveyer system for carrying the items along a path and an array of sensors spaced along and around the path for determining the opacity to radiation in planes intersecting the path and the items. A signal processor uses signals from the sensors to detect contours of maximum local rate of change in opacity and from these reconstruct boundaries between the regions having different opacity to radiation and then determines whether or not one or more predetermined screening criteria are met.
