An apparatus 10 is provided for heating and processing a product. A mixing bowl 12 includes a rounded base portion, an extended upper portion and two end walls. An agitator is positioned within the base of the bowl 12 for rotation about a rotational axis and in a closely spaced relation with the bowl 12. The agitator includes a drive shaft having a portion thereof projecting outwardly of the mixing bowl 12. The agitator having a rotational path closely spaced with the inside wall of the base portion and spaced from the upper portion of the bowl 12. An outwardly flared transition 54 maybe provided between the base and upper portion of the bowl. A microwave energy source 30 is directed into the bowl for heating the product. A choke 78 surrounds the agitator shaft to form a seal for the bowl 12 to prevent microwave leakage.

A mixing drier in the form of a spherical mixer (1) comprises an upper vessel shell (2) and a lower vessel shell (3) which can be closed together in a separation plane (T). A stirrer (7) having a stirrer shaft (11) and stirring elements (12, 12', 12') is affixed to the upper vessel shell (2). The stirrer axis (R) is inclined to the vertical (V). The separation plane (T) is perpendicular to the stirrer axis (R). The stirring elements (12, 12', 12') are located below the separation plane (T). A hinge (14) is located in the separation plane (T) and allows the vessel (B) of the spherical mixer (1) to be opened for cleaning.

The invention concerns a transporter-mixer for bulk-material/liquid mixtures and comprising a cylindrical transport container mounted on a support frame with its longitudinal axis approximately horizontal and a controllable container-drive unit whose direction can be reversed as a function of the angle of rotation. Fitted on the container periphery is a closable loading hatch, inside the container wall is a mixing screw and at the rear end of the container is an annular discharge channel with an inwards-facing discharge port. With the aim of ensuring a high degree of safety in operation under modern production conditions, the transporter-mixer is designed so that the loading hatch (313) has an inwards-opening hatch cover (315), the mean blade length of the mixing screw (311) is, at the most, 15 % of the container diameter and a curved, enclosed guide channel (333) of essentially constant cross-section is fitted between the annular discharge channel (332) round the rim of the rear of the container (3) and the central discharge port (334).
