An optical fiber preform includes: a columnar portion having an approximately constant radius of r; and a taper portion located adjacent to the columnar portion in a lengthwise direction and having a radius decreasing along the lengthwise direction. The taper portion includes: a first taper portion including a portion having a radius varying between 0.9r and 0.6r; and a second taper portion including a portion having a radius varying between 0.4r and 0.15r. A diameter of the first taper portion in the portion having the radius varying between 0.9r and 0.6r decreases so as to form a maximum angle θ1 between 40 degrees and 60 degrees with respect to the columnar portion, a diameter of the second taper portion in the portion having the radius varying between 0.4r and 0.15r decreases so as to form an average angle θ2 between 5 degrees and 30 degrees with respect to a central axis in the lengthwise direction, and a volume of the taper portion is smaller than or equal to 45% of a volume of a column having a same outer diameter as a maximum outer diameter of the taper portion and having a same length as the taper portion.

Embodiments of the invention include an optical fiber preform (30) and a multimode optical fiber drawn therefrom that has improved overfill-launch bandwidth performance without disturbing existing laser-launch bandwidth performance. The optical fiber preform includes a core region (34) configured to have a refractive index with a characteristic differential mode delay with a first portion associated with lower order modes that behaves conventionally and a second portion associated with higher order modes that deviates from conventional behavior in a way that improves overfill-launch bandwidth performance at one operating window without adversely impacting the laser-launch bandwidth performance at the same and other operating windows. Preform configurations conventionally optimized for operation at 850 nm are configured in such a way that their characteristic differential mode delay, at 1300 nm, initially increases in a conventional manner and then flattens out to approximately zero at the higher order modes. At 850 nm, the characteristic differential mode delay initially remains flat at approximately zero, in a conventional manner, and then decreases at the higher order modes.

A preform element, it production and fiber production methods from preform assemblies are disclosed. The preform element has a length and a center axis along its length, a first and second end defined by its length and an outer preform element surface. The preform element comprises a plurality of longitudinal structures disposed to form longitudinal hole(s) in a background material. At least one slot extending from its outer preform element surface and intersecting at least one of the longitudinal holes, wherein the at least one slot does not fully intersect the preform element. The preform element may be a preform center element or a preform ring element and may be assembled to a form part of a preform assembly for an optical fiber.

A known method for producing synthetic quartz glass comprises the following method steps: forming a stream from a SiO 2 starting material that contains octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) as a main component; a reference molecular mass being associated therewith; supplying the stream to a reaction zone in which the starting material is converted by pyrolysis or hydrolysis to SiO 2 while amorphous SiO 2 particles are formed; depositing the amorphous SiO 2 particles on a deposition surface to form a porous SiO 2 soot body; and vitrifying the soot body to form the quartz glass. In order to, proceeding therefrom, produce large-volume, cylindrical soot bodies having an outer diameter of more than 300 mm and an improved material homogeneity, the invention proposes that the liquid starting material contains additional components in the form of additional polyalkylsiloxanes, wherein light polyalkylsiloxanes having a relative molecular mass of less than the reference molecular mass and heavy polyalkylsiloxanes having a relative molecular mass of more than the reference molecular mass are contained with a weight proportion of at least 50 ppm and at least 30 ppm, respectively.

A rod insertion jig inserts a glass rod into a hole penetrating a cladding preform. The cladding preform has a first hole. A first glass pipe is connected to a first end of the cladding preform. A second glass pipe is connected to a second end of the cladding preform. The first glass rod that is the glass rod inserted into the first hole is a rod-shaped member of which an axial direction is a first direction. The rod insertion jig includes a support portion installed in contact with an inner surface of the first glass pipe, a first holding portion supported by the support portion inside the first glass pipe, and a first moving portion that is a member for moving the first glass rod. The first holding portion has a first mounting surface on which the first glass rod is mounted along the first direction. The support portion supports the first holding portion such that the first glass rod mounted on the first mounting surface entirely overlaps the first hole as viewed from the first direction. The first moving portion moves the first glass rod mounted on the first mounting surface in the first direction.

An optical fiber having reduced residual stress discontinuity is disclosed. The optical fiber includes a core which is an optical transmission medium and a clad for surrounding the core. The residual stress discontinuity at an interface between the core and the clad is 20.0 MPa or less, which is represented by an absolute value of a difference between a minimum axial stress at (r/a) = 0.8-1.1 and a maximum axial stress at (r/a) = 1.0-1.2, wherein a is the radius of the core and r is a radius measured from the center of the core.
