Provided is a method for manufacturing a translucent polycrystalline material with optical properties continuously varying in the material. A slurry including a group of single crystal grains that are acted upon by a force when placed in a magnetic field is immobilized in a gradient magnetic field with a spatially varying magnetic flux density and then sintered. For example, where a slurry including a group of single crystal grains of YAG doped with Er and a group of single crystal grains of YAG undoped with a rare earth material is immobilized in a magnetic field with a non-uniform distribution of magnetic field intensity, the region with a strong magnetic field becomes a laser oscillation region that is rich in Er-doped YAG and has aligned crystal orientations, whereas the region with a weak magnetic field becomes a translucent region rich in YAG undoped with a rare earth material. A polycrystalline material can be manufactured in which a core with laser oscillations and a guide surrounding the core and guiding excitation light to the core are obtained at the same time.

A sintered ferrite magnet comprising main phases of ferrite having a hexagonal M-type magnetoplumbite structure, first grain boundary phases existing between two main phases, and second grain boundary phases existing among three or more main phases, the second grain boundary phases being dispersed in its arbitrary cross section, and the second grain boundary phases having an average area of less than 0.2 µm 2 , are produced by calcining, pulverizing, molding and sintering raw material powders having the general formula of Ca 1-x-y La x A y Fe 2n-z Co z , wherein 1-x-y, x, y and z and n representing a molar ratio are in desired ranges; 1.8% or less by mass of SiO 2 and 2% or less by mass (as CaO) of CaCO 3 being added to a calcined body after calcining and before molding; and the sintering step being conducted with a temperature-elevating speed of 1-4°C/minute in a range from 1100°C to a sintering temperature, and a temperature-lowering speed of 6°C/minute or more in a range from the sintering temperature to 1100°C.

A piezoelectric material including a strontium calcium sodium niobate-based tungsten bronze structure metal oxide having a high degree of orientation is provided. A piezoelectric element, a liquid discharge head, an ultrasonic motor, and a dust cleaning device including the piezoelectric material are also provided. A piezoelectric material includes a tungsten bronze structure metal oxide that includes metal elements which are strontium, calcium, sodium, and niobium, and tungsten. The metal elements satisfy following conditions on a molar basis: when Sr/Nb=a, 0.320≦̸a≦̸0.430, when Ca/Nb=b, 0.008≦̸b≦̸0.086, and when Na/Nb=c, 0.180≦̸c≦̸0.200. The tungsten content on a metal basis is 0.40 to 3.20 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of the tungsten bronze structure metal oxide. The tungsten bronze structure metal oxide has a c-axis orientation.
