L'invention concerne un procédé de production du méthane à l'aide d'un catalyseur thiorésistant ainsi qu'un catalyseur pour réaliser ce procédé. Selon l'invention, on met en contact un mélange comprenant notamment du monoxyde de carbone, de l'hydrogène, et des composés soufrés, dans un rapport molaire hydrogène/monoxyde de carbone sensiblement égal à 1, avec un catalyseur thiorésistant à base de sulfure de tungstène, présentant une surface spécifique de 20 à 100 m²/g, à une pression comprise entre 1 et 50 bars et à une température comprise entre environ 250 et 600°C. Le procédé utilisant un tel catalyseur est particulièrement utile pour réaliser la synthèse du méthane efficacement et permettre d'obtenir une sélectivité très améliorée en faveur du méthane.
