The present invention relates to composite materials including thermoset resin fiber components. The thermoset resin fiber components may include a single fiber of thermoset resin or a plurality of fibers commingled together. The properties and characteristics of the thermoset resin used are chosen according to the material to be produced therefrom. The thermoset fiber components may be woven into reinforcement fibers to form prepregs. Thermoplastic fibers may be commingled and co-woven with the thermoset fiber components.

The present invention provides a sheet like article produced from a polyurethane resin having a carbonate group and an oxycarbonyl group as ester groups and having uniform, elegant surface quality, a flexible, highly crease recoverable texture, and high resistance to light and hydrolysis, and also provides a production method therefore. The sheet like article according to the present invention is one that is produced by adding, as a binder, a polyurethane resin that meets the requirements (I) and (II) given below to a fibrous base material formed mainly of ultrafine fibers: (I) A polyurethane resin such that the polyurethane resin contains, in its interior, an oxycarbonyl group and a carbonate group as ester groups. (II) A polyurethane resin such that the sum of the content of the urethane group and the content of the urea group in the polyurethane resin is 7.0 to 11.0 mass%.

A method of making a fiber comprised of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) having monomer groups grafted onto the fiber surface, the method comprising the steps of (i) providing a fiber of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) that has been dried to remove adsorbed moisture, (ii) treating the fiber, in a non-polar solvent that will not dissolve the fiber, with a phosphazene base that exhibits a pKa in dimethylsulfoxide of at least 21 so as to generate anions at the amide sites on the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, (iii) washing the base-activated fiber with an aprotic solvent, (iv) grafting a monomer onto the anion sites so as to introduce reactive functional groups onto the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, and (v) washing the grafted fiber of step (iv) with a protic solvent to extract any residual base compounds and grafting agents that are unbound to the surface of the fibers.

The invention relates to a process for producing a friction-reducing coating made of a yarn produced from a synthetic polymer matrix chemically bonded with a polyfluorinated hydrocarbon and of a hardenable resin matrix with at least the following process steps: the polyfluorinated hydrocarbon is activated by means of high-energy irradiation with formation of reactive functional groups, the activated polyfluorinated hydrocarbon is reacted chemically with the synthetic polymer component in a reactive extrusion process to give a substrate in the form of granules, filaments are produced from the substrate by means of a spinning process, a multiplicity of filaments are spun to give a yarn, a resin-saturated textile product is produced from the yarn and the resin matrix, and is hardened to give a semifinished product, and the friction-reducing coating is produced from the semifinished product by subsequent final shaping.
