A boron containing ceramic-aluminum metal composite with a density of at least 95 percent of theoretical density and comprised of at least 30 percent by volume aluminum metal or alloy thereof. The boron containing ceramic and at least one reaction product of the boron containing ceramic and aluminum are dispersed within the aluminum metal or alloy. At most a trace of Al 4 C 3 is present in the composite. The composite can be formed by mixing a boron containing ceramic with a metal powder comprised of aluminum or aluminum alloy, shaping the mixture into a porous preform, contacting the preform with an infiltrating metal comprised of aluminum or aluminum alloy that melts at a lower temperature than the metal powder and heating to a temperature sufficient to melt the infiltrating metal, but insufficient to melt the metal powder. The infiltrating metal infiltrates the porous preform to form the composite. The composite may be used for vehicle parts.

a) contacting a non-wettable powder that is non-wetting and non-reactive to a metal to be used for infiltration with a shaped ceramic body having a removable portion not present in said article to form a layer of the non-wettable powder covering the surface of the shaped ceramic body except for said removable portion, wherein the shaped ceramic body is comprised of a ceramic which is reactive with the metal under the conditions of step (b); b) infiltrating the shaped ceramic body with the metal through said removable portion, where there is no layer of the non-wettable powder, such that a complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite comprising one or more metal phases and one or more ceramic phases is formed, wherein undesirable regions of excess metal on the surface and undesirable phases within the complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite article near the surface are located only in said removable portion; and (c) removing said removable portion, whereby the article has substantially the net shape of the shaped ceramic body without said portion.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Bauteils, welches bereichsweise aus einem Keramik-Metall-Verbundwerkstoff hergestellt ist sowie das Bauteil selbst. Zur Herstellung des Bauteils wird ein aus keramischen Vorprodukten hergestellter poröser Opferkörper bei einer vorgebbaren und bei oder oberhalb der Erweichungstemperatur eines befüllenden Metalls liegenden Befüllungstemparatur und unter erhöhtem Druck mit erweichtem mit erweichtem Metall und/oder einer metallischen Legierung, befüllt, der befüllte Opferkörper auf eine gegenüber der Befüllungstemparatur höhere Reaktionstemperatur oder darüber erhitzt, wobei zwischen dem befüllenden Metall (BMe) und dem Metall der Keramik des Opferkörpers (KMe) eine Reaktion durchgeführt wird, bei der der Keramik-Metall-Verbundwerkstoff mit einer keramischen und einer metallischen Phase gebildet wird, wobei die keramische Phase KMe m B x und/oder KMe n C y und/oder KMe o CN und BMe p O 3 aufweist und wobei die metallische Phase eine intermetallische Verbindung aus einem Metall der Keramik (KMe) und einem befüllenden Metall (BMe) aufweist. Für eine günstige Herstellung des Bauteils sieht die Erfindung vor, daß der Opferkörper in ein Druckgußwerkzeug lagedefiniert und bezüglich des Druckgußwerkzeugs ortsfest sowie die Druckgußform bis auf vom Opferkörper freie Zwischenbereiche ausfüllend eingelegt wird, daß bei dem Druckguß des Bauteils der Opferkörper mit dem befüllenden Metall (BMe) befüllt wird, daß mit dem Druckgußwerkzeug eine zumindest endnahe Form des Bauteils, bestehend aus befülltem Opferkörper und dem/den vom Opferkörper freien Zwischenelemente(n) - gegossen wird und daß das fertig gegossene Bauteil im Bereich des Opferkörpers auf oder über Reaktionstemperatur erhitzt wird.

A brake drum includes a ring-shaped drum body (13), and a friction member (16) secured to the inner circumferential surface (18) of the drum body. Because the drum body is formed of a lightweight A1 alloy and the friction member is formed of an A1-base composite material, the brake drum can be reduced in weight as a whole. Further, because the friction member, having projecting portions (17a) formed on its outer periphery (17), is cast-enveloped by molten metal of the A1 alloy, the friction member and the drum body can be firmly fastened together. Thus, even when a great braking force is applied to the drum brake, the friction member can be prevented from being undesirably detached from the drum body.
