The optical filters are fixed with respect to the support and the mechanical elements and the optical filters are superimposed.

The spatial distribution of mass within an individual analyte can be imaged - in real time and with molecular-scale resolution - when it adsorbs onto a nanomechanical resonator. Each single-molecule adsorption event induces discrete, time-correlated perturbations to the modal frequencies of the device. By continuous monitoring of multiple vibrational modes, the spatial moments of mass distribution can be deduced for individual analytes, one-by-one, as they adsorb. This new method was validated for inertial imaging using both experimental multimode frequency-shift data and finite-element simulations - to analyze the inertial mass, position-of-adsorption, and the shape of individual analytes. Unlike conventional imaging, the spatial resolution of nanomechanical inertial imaging is not limited by wavelength-dependent diffraction phenomena; instead frequency fluctuation processes determine the ultimate attainable resolution. Advanced NEMS devices can provide atomic-scale resolution.

Method for measuring a target particle property. A suspended microchannel resonator is calibrated to determine the relationship between a detected mass and a resonance frequency shift of the resonator. The target particle is suspended in a fluid and introduced into the resonator, and the resonator frequency shift due to the particle is measured. Target particle mass is calculated from the resonator frequency shift, the target particle density, and the fluid density. A target particle property such as size or volume is determined from the calculated target particle mass.

Disclosed is a method for measuring physical characteristics, such as size and weight, of individual molecules. The method involves subjecting a deformable or nondeformable molecule to an external force which causes conformational or positional changes and then measuring these changes. Preferred ways to measure such changes include: 1) determining the rate at which a molecule becomes oriented in a new direction when the direction of the perturbing force is changed, 2) determining the rate at which a deformable molecule returns to a relaxed state after termination of the external force, 3) determining the rate at which a molecule rotates, 4) measuring the length of a molecule when it is partially stretched, or 5) measuring the diameter of a spherical or ellipsoidal molecule. These measurements can be performed by use of a light microscope connected to an image processor or spectroscopic device. The invention is particularly useful for measuring polymeric molecules such as nucleic acids and can be used to determine size and map location of restriction digests.

The system further includes a particle analysis apparatus having a sample cell and sample delivery means for delivering the particulate material sample to the sample cell, wherein the particle analysis apparatus is adapted to obtain particle information on at least one particle in that particulate material sample while the at least one particle is in the sample cell. Furthermore, the system also includes fluid manipulation means for manipulating movement of the fluid medium while the particle analysis apparatus is obtaining the particle information on the at least one particle, and a data processing apparatus that is adapted to determine a specific gravity of the at least one particle based on the obtained particle information.
