A device for holographic reconstruction of three-dimensional scenes includes optical focusing means which directs sufficiently coherent light from light means to the eyes of at least one observer via a spatial light modulator that is encoded with holographic information. The device has a plurality of illumination units for illuminating the surface of the spatial light modulator (SLM); each unit comprises a focusing element (21/22/23 or 24), and a light means (LS1/LS2/LS3 or LS4) that emits sufficiently coherent light such that each of these illumination units illuminates one separate illuminated region (R1/R2/R3 or R4) of the surface, whereby the focusing element and the light means are arranged such that the light emitted by the light means (LS1 - LS4) coincides close to or at the observer eyes.

A moving-image holographic reproducing device that includes a reflective liquid crystal display and further a light-emitting diode functioning as a light source and that is capable of reproducing a high-resolution image in a simple way is provided. Also, a color moving-image holographic reproducing device that is capable of reproducing a color holographic image by a significantly simplified structure using a single plate hologram without the need for time-multiplexing is provided. The moving-image holographic reproducing device includes a computer for creating a hologram from three-dimensional coordinate data, a reflective liquid crystal display for displaying the hologram, a half mirror for projecting the displayed hologram, and a light-emitting diode, wherein a reconstructed three-dimensional image is displayed by illuminating the half mirror with light emitted from the light-emitting diode. Manipulating a sufficiently large size three-dimensional holographic image in real time requires computational power one thousand to ten thousand times higher than that of current supercomputers. According to the present invention, such an amount of information can be processed at high speed by dedicated hardware in a highly parallel and distributed manner.

Systems and methods for sub-aperture correlation based wavefront measurement in a thick sample and correction as a post processing technique for interferometric imaging to achieve near diffraction limited resolution are described. Theory, simulation and experimental results are presented for the case of full field interference microscopy. The inventive technique can be applied to any coherent interferometric imaging technique and does not require knowledge of any system parameters. In one embodiment of the present invention, a fast and simple way to correct for defocus aberration is described. A variety of applications for the inventive method are presented.

The invention relates to information technologies and is intended for visualizing three-dimensional images. The technical result of the invention consists in creating electrically controlled three-dimensional phase diffraction gratings and, on their basis, screens for displaying three-dimensional color images. A method for visualizing images comprises directing a beam of broadband optical radiation at a matrix of electrically controlled elements, or pixels, the pixels being supplied with a voltage, its distribution over the matrix being calculated so as to produce a desired change in the current optical characteristics of the pixels, and viewing the image. Moreover, the beam of optical radiation is directed simultaneously at a stack of pixel matrixes in which the matrixes are arranged parallel to one another, the matrixes being irradiated from the side from which the image is viewed, the refraction index being used as a variable optical characteristic of pixels in all the matrixes. The device for performing the claimed method comprises a screen that is a multi-layered structure made of materials transparent to electromagnetic radiation within the optical range, the multi-layered structure comprising alternating layers of material displaying an electro-optical effect and layers of a transparent material that does not display an electro-optical effect, all the layers displaying an electro-optical effect being insulated electrically from one another and each of them being made as a matrix of electrically controlled elements, or pixels.
