The invention relates to a computer-generated hologram fabrication process that enables a plurality of original images to be observed with master-slave relations. Original images 11, 12, a recording surface 20 and reference light R are defined on a computer, and a number of point light sources P11-1, ..., P12-1, ... as samples are defined on each original image. Given angles of spreading of object light beams emitted from individual point light sources are defined, and areas on the recording surface 20, at which object light beams emitted from point light sources defined on each original image 11, 12 with the thus limited given angles of spreading arrive, are determined as recording areas α11 and α12 corresponding to the original images 11 and 12. When there is an overlapping (hatched) portion in the recording areas, the overlapping portion is determined as a recording area corresponding to the master original image. Within the area α11 there is recorded only information about the original image 11, and within the area α12 there is recorded only information about the original image 12. Upon reconstruction, the boundary portion of the master original image is enhanced.

The steps are summarized as follows: three-dimensional data of the display object are converted into computational data for fringe pattern generation; a sampling rule for sampling computational data is selected; computational data are sampled according to a selected sampling rule; wavefronts generated by light illumination are computed by assuming that each sampled position has a light source; fringe patterns generated by computed_wavefronts and a reference beam are computed; fringe patterns are stored as hologram images; sampling and a wavefront generation are repeated for all data; and a series of hologram images thus generated are displayed successively.

A reduction in speckle patterns in the reconstruction of a 3D scene can be achieved by way of averaging. In a holographic reconstruction device, speckle patterns are intended to be suppressed while taking account of the visible resolution of the reconstruction of the scene. The holographic reconstruction device is designed such that the visible resolution of the reconstruction of the scene is matched to the resolution capability of the human eye, to the imaging properties of the reconstruction means (RM) used or to the resolution capability of the light modulation means (SLM) used. Method steps are carried out, in which a grid scale for the object points (OP) is generated by way of system control means (SM) in each case in a plane of intersection (SE), which grid scale cannot be used to separately resolve adjacent object points (OP) in the plane of intersection (SE), and the compilation of object points (OP) of the respective plane of intersection (SE) to form an object point group with adjacent object points (OP) which can be separately resolved is carried out. In holographic displays, the invention is used to reduce speckle patterns and reduce the number of the holograms of object points of the scene, which are to be calculated and coded, and the calculation complexity.

A method of displaying a computer generated hologram includes displaying the image as a set of facets that approximated to the true shape of the object to be displayed. Each of these facets is populated with points that together make up the image. The invention provides a number of array structures that allow adjoining facets at different orientations and angles to be populated with point without creating areas around the join of either point overpopulation or point underpopulation, and so results in a higher quality image. The invention is mainly applicable for producing interference base Computer Generated Holograms, but can also be used in other types of 3D display that make up objects from an array of points.
