An aluminum phosphate composition comprising aluminum phosphate, aluminum polyphosphate, aluminum metaphosphate, or a mixture thereof. The composisition may be characterized by, when in powder form, having particles wherein some of the particles have at least one or more voids per particle. In addition, the composition is characterized by exhibiting two endothermic peaks in Differential Scanning Calorimetry between about 90 degrees to about 250 degrees Celsius. The composition is also characterized by, when in powder form, having a dispersibility of at least 0.025 grams per 1.0 gram of water. The composition is made by a process comprising contacting phosphoric acid with aluminum sulfate and an alkaline solution to produce an aluminum phosphate based product; and optionally calcining the aluminum phosphate, polyphosphate or metaphosphate based product at an elevated temperature. The composition is useful in paints and as a substitute for titanium dioxide.

Acicular, crystalline calcium metaphosphate having a length to average diameter ratio of at least 10:1 can be prepared by forming a melt of materials used as a source of calcium, phosphorus and alkali metal, usually at about 1000to 1200°C., cooling the melt to within the range about 550°C. to about 970°c., inducing acicular crystal formation, and recovering the acicular crystals. The diameters of the resultant acicular, crystalline calcium metaphosphates can vary from an average of 0.5 micron or smaller up to several microns. Cryst- afs having a length of several centimeters can be prepared. Such acicular, crystalline calcium metaphosphates are useful in a number of applications, and particularly to prepare composites with organic polymeric materials.

The binder composition includes sintered crystalline chromium metaphosphate or chromium-aluminum metaphosphate, or combinations of the two distributed in the binder. The provided compositions are free of chromium oxide yet exhibit excellent slag resistance and are easily disposed of.

Substantially crystalline calcium sodium metaphosphate having a degree of crystallinity from about 60% to about 75% as determined from density and differential thermal analysis measurements is prepared by (a) forming a dry mixture of source materials for CaO, Na₂O, and P₂O₅ in proportions sufficient to provide a CaO/Na₂O/P₂O₅ mol percent ratio on a dry basis of about 29.0-34.0/16.0-18.0/50.0-53.0 and (b) heating the mixture at a temperature and for a time sufficient devolatilize the mixture and calcine the resulting mixture to form the substantially crystalline calcium sodium metaphosphate.

A method of preparing an aluminum metaphosphate (ALMP) particulate product includes charging a milling chamber of a ball mill with grinding media and loading an ALMP feedstock into the milling chamber. The ALMP feedstock is milled with the grinding media into ALMP particles at a particle reduction index in a range from 0.25 to 0.5. At a plurality of time steps during a period in which the milling is carried out, a fine fraction of the ALMP particles is removed from the milling chamber while a coarse fraction of the ALMP particles remains in the milling chamber for additional milling. An ALMP particulate product with a particle size distribution having a median particle size in a range from 100 μm to 700 μm is prepared from the ALMP particles removed from the milling chamber.
