A purpose of the present invention is to provide a novel glucose derivative, which is taken into cells via a membrane sugar transport system and is represented by formula (1). Another purpose of the present invention is to provide an imaging agent and an imaging method for a cell or intracellular molecule using said glucose derivative. Yet another purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for detecting cancer cells with good accuracy using said glucose derivative and an imaging agent to be used in said method. The present invention provides D-glucose derivatives and L-glucose derivatives in which glucose is bound to the 7-position of a fluorescent molecular group with a coumarin backbone or a quinolone backbone. Also provided are a cell imaging agent and imaging method using the derivative. A cancer cell imaging agent and imaging method using the L-glucose derivative is also provided. G is a group selected from formulas (G1) - (G4) below.

Disclosed are novel coumarin based fluorogenic compounds useful in assaying for biological activity. Specifically, these fluorogenic compounds exhibit fluorescence at particular wavelengths when cleaved by target enzymes. Preferred compounds include sugar and peptide derivatives of umbelliferone derivatives bearing a heterocyclic five membered ring at the 3-position. These compounds can be used for rapidly detecting food pathogens and for determining sterilization effectiveness. The compounds may also be used in a form bounded to a polymeric support or to a biomolecule or macromolecule.

Chromogenic and fluorogenic 4,7-dialkoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid substrates of general formula (I) are provided wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R3 is a chromogenic or fluorogenic group. These substrates can be used to detect influenza types A and B in clinical samples or specimens. More particularly, these 4,7-dialkoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid substrates can be used to distinguish between various viruses having neuraminidase reactivity. Thus, influenza type A and B viruses can be distinguished from parainfluenza type 1, 2, 3 and 4, and mumps using the 4,7-dialkoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives of this invention. Diagnostic methods employing these substrates are provided to identify influenza type A and B viruses in clinical specimens and to distinguish from other viruses having neuraminidase reactivity.

Sialic acid derivatives are disclosed having a group represented by the formula (I):
wherein X is hydrogen, a lower alkyl group or benzyl, Y is hydrogen or acetyl, Ac is acetyl, and the wavy lines indicate that the compounds of formula (I) include both the α-anomer and the β-anomer, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The sialic acid derivatives have excellent chemical and enzymatical stability. The compounds are useful for the treatment of central or peripheral nervous diseses.
