    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a living radical polymerization catalyst that is inexpensive, has high activity, and is friendly to the environment.SOLUTION: There is provided a catalyst for a living radical polymerization method, where the catalyst contains a central element comprising carbon and at least one halogen atom bonded to the central element. A hydrocarbon compound can also be used as a catalyst precursor. A polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained and the cost of living radical polymerization can be reduced dramatically by radically polymerizing a monomer having a radically reactive unsaturated bond in the presence of the catalyst. The invention has advantages such as low toxicity, small amount to be used, and high solubility of the catalyst; mild reaction conditions; no color and no smell (no need for post-treatment of its molded article), and therefore the method is especially friendly to the environment and has excellent economic efficiency as compared with conventional living radical polymerization methods.
