Abstract:
A method and apparatus for remotely opening a manual valve of a gas cylinder from a remote location. The gas cylinder is first connected to a purge system which is purged of oxygen and pressurized with an inert gas to a pressure near that of the gas cylinder. The manual valve is then engaged with a pneumatic stepper mechanism. Pneumatic fluid is supplied to the pneumatic stepper mechanism to rotate the manual valve a predetermined stepped increment. The step of supplying pneumatic fluid to the pneumatic stepper mechanism is repeated, after pausing to let the system settle, to rotate the manual valve another stepped increment. The steps of rotating and pausing are repeated until the manual valve is opened. The purge system is then vented to atmosphere through a diffuser. Both the pneumatic stepper mechanism and the purge system are fully operable from the remote location. The pneumatic stepper mechanism includes a ratchet assembly and an attachment assembly connecting the ratchet assembly to the manual valve. The ratchet assembly includes a gear rotatable about all axis, a drive arm pivotable about the axis, a pneumatic cylinder attached to the drive bar, and a driving pawl pivotably attached to the drive bar and operably engaging the gear. The drive bar is reciprocally pivoted about the axis as the pneumatic cylinder extends and retracts and the driving pawl rotates the gear in only one direction as the drive bar pivots.
Abstract:
Aluminum and aluminum alloy melts are purified by removing entrained gaseous impurities and solid particulate impurities, primarily aluminum oxides, by bubbling a non-corrosive intimate mixture of sulfur hexafluoride in an inert gas. Magnesium levels, if present, are not significantly reduced. The process is reliable and the gas mixture safe for aluminum purifying operations and procedures.
Abstract:
A device for pressurized contents and an associated method. The device includes a container and a port assembly. In one aspect, the port assembly includes a body, a plunger, a seal arrangement, a plunger bias device, and a bushing. The plunger is movable and has a conduit for contents flow. The bushing moves the plunger, against the bias device, from the first plunger to a second plunger position to open the seal arrangement during movement of the bushing to permit contents flow. In another aspect, the device is transportable, and a valve assembly flow controller includes a valve, a regulator, and a flow meter. The device includes a protective housing, coupled to the container, enshrouding the flow controller to protect the flow controller from impact and transmit impact forces to the container. The housing is configured to permit access to the flow controller and inspection of the container and port connection to verify leak tightness with the housing coupled to the container.
Abstract:
A method of removing sterilization gas from a load disposed in a chamber. In accordance with the method, the chamber is evacuated to a subatmospheric pressure. A diffusion gas comprising helium is provided. An amount of the diffusion gas is introduced into the chamber effective to create a superatmospheric diffusion pressure in the chamber. The diffusion gas is allowed to diffuse throughout the chamber to displace sterilization gas from the load. The chamber is evacuated to remove portions of the diffusion gas and the sterilization gas from the chamber.
