Abstract: Techniques are described for detecting whether a phased array antenna is to be calibrated. In an example, a controller communicatively coupled with the phased array antenna measures a characteristic of a probe signal. The probe signal is communicated between an antenna element of the phased array antenna and a probe antenna mounted to the phased array antenna. The probe antenna is over-resonant. The controller further determines a drift of the phased array antenna based at least in part on the characteristic. Based at least in part on the drift, the controller initiates a calibration of the phased array antenna.

Abstract: Technologies directed to calibration and measurement of transmit phased array antennas with digital beamforming are described. One method includes a communication device generating a radio frequency (RF) signal and a reference RF signal generated using a first offset value. A processing device sending to a measurement device data indicating a first periodicity of the first RF signal and a first data acquisition parameter. The processing device receives measurement data indicating conditions of the first RF signal and the reference RF signal received at the measurement device. The processing device determines signal characteristics of the first RF signal and the reference RF signal. The processing device sends a command to the communication device. The command indicates a modification of the first offset value to a second offset value. The communication device generates a second RF signal using the second offset value.

Abstract: Technologies directed to a slot antenna as a calibration antenna for a phased array antenna are described. The antenna structure includes a ground plane, a first antenna element, and a second antenna element. The first antenna element and the second antenna element are located in a first plane that is separated from the ground plane by a first distance. The second antenna element is separated from the first antenna element by a second distance. Conductive material is located in the first plane the first antenna element and the second antenna element. A portion of the conductive material adjacent to the first antenna element includes a slot antenna. A radio frequency feed point is located at the slot antenna. The conductive material electrically isolates the first antenna element and the second antenna element and radiates electromagnetic energy as a slot antenna.

Abstract: Technologies directed to calibrating phased array antennas are described. A processing device of a communication device causes a first radio to send a first signal via a first antenna element. The first signal has a set of tones. Each tone of the set of tones has a frequency within a fixed frequency range. The processing device causes a second radio to receive a second signal via a second antenna element. The second signal is a response to the first signal. The processing device determines that there is a difference between the second signal and a reference signal. The processing device adjusts at least one of a phase parameter value, a gain parameter value, or a time-delay parameter value of a radio frequency component based on the difference.
