Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus for decreasing harmful emissions is provided. The system includes an aftertreatment system configured to receive exhaust gas from an engine system; a heater coupled to the aftertreatment system and configured to provide heat; and a controller coupled to the heater. The controller is configured to: determine that the engine system is idling; in response to determining that the engine system is idling, determine whether a value regarding operation of the engine system is greater than a threshold value; in response to determining that the value is greater than the threshold value, determine whether a temperature regarding the aftertreatment system is greater than a threshold temperature; and in response to determining that the temperature of the aftertreatment system is greater than the threshold temperature, at least one of disable or partially disable the heater.

Abstract: A system and method of controlling operation of an internal combustion engine are provided. The method includes performing a cylinder deactivation operation while running the engine, selecting at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions to increase an exhaust temperature, and performing at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions effective to increase the exhaust temperature. The plurality of temperature maintenance actions may include one or more of a charge air cooler bypass operation, an EGR cooler bypass operation, an aftertreatment system heater operation, a turbocharger bypass operation, a turbocharger geometry adjustment operation, an intake air throttle adjustment operation, and a delayed injection timing operation, or combinations thereof.

Abstract: A method comprises determining that an aftertreatment system is in a cold-operation mode; initiating a low engine-out NOx (LEON) mode by controlling a component of a vehicle containing the aftertreatment system to decrease an instantaneous engine out NOx (EONOx) amount and to increase exhaust energy relative to a normal operation mode for an engine of the vehicle; receiving information indicative of an operating status of the vehicle during the LEON mode; disengaging the LEON mode; subsequent to disengaging the LEON mode, initiating a thermal management (TM) mode for the aftertreatment system, wherein the TM mode is initiated by controlling a component of the vehicle to increase fueling to the engine for a power level by reducing engine efficiency and directing excess fuel to the aftertreatment system; receiving information indicative of an operating status of the vehicle during the TM mode; and disengaging the TM mode.

The method also includes comparing a temperature of the aftertreatment system to a threshold temperature. The method also includes responsive to determining that the temperature of the aftertreatment system exceeds the threshold temperature, disengaging the LEON mode. The method also includes responsive to determining that the temperature of the aftertreatment system is below the threshold temperature, comparing a NOx value to a NOx value threshold. The method also includes disengaging the LEON mode responsive to determining that the NOx value exceeds the NOx value threshold.
