Abstract: A system includes a controller having at least one processor coupled to a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, causes the controller to: receive data indicative of operating conditions of at least one of an engine or of an aftertreatment system; determine, during a first period of time, that an amount of NOx output from the aftertreatment system satisfies a low NOx operating mode condition based on the data indicative of operating conditions; determine, during a second period of time, that operating conditions for a conversion efficiency are present based on the data indicative of the operating conditions of the aftertreatment system; determine that the amount of NOx output from the aftertreatment system satisfies a high NOx operating mode condition; and selectively set an alert based on a retrieved minimum value and a retrieved maximum value of the amount of NOx outputs.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are devices, systems, and methods relating to balancing engine performance and engine emissions of an engine in a vehicle in real time. In an example, a method can include sensing operation data indicative of an engine response during a current engine operation. The current ending operation can include a supervisory control of engine emissions. The method can include evaluating a response model to determine engine performance deviation data corresponding to an expected baseline engine performance and an expected current engine performance at the current engine operation. This evaluation can be performed via controller. This evaluation can be based on the operation data. The method can include generating and setting a performance constraint in response to evaluating the response model. The performance constraint can be set such that the engine performance deviation data is maintained at a controls objective that inhibits deterioration of the engine performance over time.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided to heat a catalyst of an after-treatment system for a vehicle. The after-treatment system is powered by a battery. An operational parameter of the battery and the driving mode of the vehicle is determined. After receiving an indication that a first operational parameter threshold has been surpassed and a torque demand of the vehicle has been predicted, heat is provided to the catalyst of the after-treatment system based on the predicted torque demand of the vehicle surpassing a second operational parameter threshold.

Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling a performance variable of an engine system are provided. An apparatus includes a response model circuit structured to apply a constraint to a response model that represents a relationship regarding a manipulated variable or a relationship between the performance variable and the manipulated variable. The apparatus further includes an optimization circuit structured to determine a target for the manipulated variable via the response model such that the target of the manipulated variable satisfies the constraint of the response model. The performance variable is indicative of performance of operation of the engine system and the manipulated variable is capable of affecting the performance variable. Operation of the engine system is adjusted based upon the target of the manipulated variable by controlling at least one of a fuel system or an air handling system of the engine system.

Abstract: A method of providing a heating cycle for an after-treatment system is described. The method comprises initiating a pre-charge cycle of a DCDC converter and determining a temperature of the after-treatment system. In response to determining the temperature of the after-treatment system is below a threshold temperature and the pre-charge is complete, the method further comprises operating a solid-state switch to electrically connect a high voltage power source to a heating element to of the after-treatment system, and heating the after-treatment system with the heating element until the after-treatment system reaches the threshold temperature.

Abstract: A method for monitoring a gas sensor (14) which comprises two electrochemical measuring cells (20, 30) and which is arranged in an exhaust tract (10) of an internal combustion engine (11), wherein the sensor elements (20, 30) exhibit a substantially identical sensitivity towards a first gas component and a different sensitivity towards a second gas component and are insensitive towards further gas components. In an operating state in which an exhaust gas stream at the gas sensor (14) contains less of the second gas component than of the first gas component a concentration of the first gas component is calculated from each of the sensor signals from the sensor elements (20, 30) and a defect in a sensor element (20, 30) is deduced from the concentrations of the first gas component.

Abstract: A method of operating an engine includes igniting a combustible mixture in a combustion chamber of the engine, which produces exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are ejected into an exhaust manifold of the engine to create a primary exhaust stream. A portion of the exhaust gases is separated from the primary exhaust stream to create a secondary exhaust stream. Air and fuel are then mixed with the secondary exhaust stream to form a reformer feed mixture. The reformer feed mixture is reacted in a catalytic reformer to create a reformate exhaust stream, which is then mixed with an intake air stream to create a mixed air stream. The mixed air stream is the fed to the combustion chamber of the engine as the combustible mixture.

The method provides the steps of calculating the thermal power needed to reach the nominal operating temperature of the at least one catalytic converter and determining an actual number of revolutions with which to operate a fresh air pumping device based on the sum of a nominal number of revolutions, a closed-loop contribution of the number of revolutions with which to operate the fresh air pumping device, and a further contribution of the number of revolutions with which to operate the fresh air pumping device in order to ensure optimal thermal power exiting the burner.
