    摘要: A nearly pure neon is described along with a method of operating the lamp. A phosphor is coated on the lamp wall. By properly stimulating the neon, ultraviolet light may be emitted, that can stimulate the phosphor to a first light emission. The lamp may then be operated to produce a visible light emission that is the result of neon emission or of intermediate combinations of the neon and phosphor emissions. A single neon lamp may then produce in one instance, an amber color, or in other instance, a red color without the cold environment problems typical of a mercury based lamp. The output efficiency is enhanced when the lamp is formed as an aperture lamp. The narrow source is also useful as a source in reflector and lens systems. High pressure neon lamps offer a small source size, direct color with no filtering, good tolerance of impact and jarring, moderate cost, and increased vehicle styling potential.

    摘要: A metal-halide arc tube and lamp having improved uniformity of azimuthal luminous intensity and being particularly suited for navigational signal applications. The arc tube when operationally positioned about a vertical axis has a body which is substantially egg-shaped with the lower half of the body being more oblate than the upper half. During operation, the surface of the upper half of the arc tube body remains entirely free of metal-halide condensate so that no emitted light is blocked by condensate in any direction and nearly uniform azimuthal intensity is achieved. A heat-reflecting coating about the lower electrode prevents the formation of a condensate puddle about the lower electrode and relocates the condensate during operation to an area of the lower half above the coating and below the center of the arc tube. The arc tube may be seasoned during initial startup so that all of the additive remains solidified and bonded to a surface of the lower half of the arc tube during shipping and installation of the lamp. Preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed which are designed for a coastal signal beacon. In addition to nearly uniform azimuthal intensity, the invention provides the advantages of greater range, wider beam width, longer life, improved efficiency, and equivalent or greater ruggedness for use in an all weather environment in comparison with the prior art.

    摘要: A D.C. operable, miniature, low-wattage, single ended, arc discharge lamp. The cathode electrode includes electrical field modifying means to insure that the arc strikes between the electrode tips. During high pressure (.about.10 atm) operation electrode heating of the anode is dominated by electron bombardment, which creates substantially higher heat at the anode tip than at the cathode tip (the cathode being heated by ion bombardment and cooled by thermionic electron emission). Heat conducted down the anode electrode is dissipated in the single press and contributes to the heat conduction in the closely adjacent cathode electrode thereby reducing the net heat loss therein and helping to maintain the desired cathode temperature.

    摘要: A pulsed light source includes a sealed, ultraviolet-transmissive lamp tube defining a discharge region containing a rare gas or a mixture of rare gases, anode and cathode electrodes sealed into the lamp tube at opposite ends, leads for connecting the electrodes to a pulsed source of electrical energy and a phosphor material located on a surface external to the discharge region. The lamp tube contains mercury in sufficient quantity to cover the cathode electrode when the lamp tube is oriented with the cathode electrode at the bottom. The cathode electrode is protected by the mercury from sputtering that results from ion bombardment. The mercury emits pulsed ultraviolet radiation which stimulates emission of visible light by the phosphor material. Lamp tube pressure is below 200 torr. The light source is operable over a range of pulse widths and duty cycles. The color of light emission is determined by the phosphor. The phosphor can be located on the outer surface of the lamp tube or on a separate glass sleeve.

An arc discharge headlamp system may be formed with a lamp housing including an enclosed reflector, a double ended arc discharge lamp having a two leads at offset ends, enclosed in the reflector. The high potential conductor embedded in the lamp housing extends subsurface to a ballast cavity formed in the lamp housing and enclosing a ballast. The ballast is potted in the cavity to protect it. A second lamp lead extends through a second lamp support to the rear of the lamp housing to be connected to the ballast. The lamp capsule, high potential leads, and ballast are all securely enclosed as a single unit with potential leakage between elements, and with the outside prevented.

    摘要: An arc discharge lamp having an elongated outer envelope being orthogonal or transverse to the central axis of the lamp base. The invention provides an optically precise, extremely rugged, very efficient, and long-lived light source particularly well suited for use in rotating navigational signals which are for use in rotating navigational signals which are frequently situated in remote locations and exposed to all types of weather conditions. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lamp comprises a base having a vertical central axis, a light-transmissive outer envelope elongated along a horizontal central axis, and an upwardly arched arc tube for horizontal operation mounted within the outer envelope. In comparison with filamented counterparts of equal wattage from the prior art, the arc discharge source provides greater luminous efficacy and lamp life. When a lamp in accordance with the invention is selected to match the observable range and flash period of an existing beacon, the operating power of the arc source is substantially reduced in comparison with the presently employed filamented source. A lamp in accordance with the invention may be retrofitted into existing navigational beacons; it may be powered from solar sources; and its use results in substantially reduced maintenance costs.
