Abstract:
Fatigue lifetime enhancement of the holes formed in structural members occurs by introducing a cold working tool or interference fit fasteners fabricated from shape memory alloy materials. The tool may be employed to expand the wall of a hole while the tool material is raised above the critical transitional temperature. Then, upon lowering the tool material below the critical transitional material, it contracts permitting it to be withdrawn. Bushings and interference fit fasteners may be installed in holes formed in structural members when a shape alloy material bushing or fastener is heated above the critical transitional temperature so that an interference fit results and the hole is cold worked. If the alloy material is not cooled below the critical transitional temperature, the interference fit may be permanently maintained, thereby further enhancing the fatigue life of the members.
Abstract:
A system and method for facilitating facsimile transmissions has one or more store and forward facilities, each associated with a plurality of subscriber facsimile machines, typically coupled over the switched telephone network. The store and forward facilities include a computer for controlling operations and mass data storage equipment. A subscriber to the system delivers an outgoing facsimile message to the store and forward facility with which it is associated, which records the fax message together with data as to originating facsimile machine and destination facsimile machine. The store and forward facility then delivers the facsimile message to the intended receiver facsimile machine, either directly or through another store and forward facility. If unsuccessful on an initial attempt, the store and forward facility periodically retrys to send the facsimile message. The system also provides spooling of all facsimile messages for an intended receiver machine, which are all transmitted upon making connection with the receiver machine. Subscriber mailboxes are provided as part of the mass storage, which can be accessed by a subscriber to have his messages delivered to any facsimile machine he designates. Secure facsimile transmission is achieved through use of subscriber PIN numbers. Broadcasting, redirecting messages and cost accounting can also achieved by the system and method.

Abstract:
Diffusion bonding of aluminum alloy objects of different sizes and shapes may be greatly improved when the surface of the object is exposed to a mechanical deformation cycle which forms a cold-worked surface microstructure, followed by a heat treatment cycle to produce recrystallization of the surface layer. The method of the invention results in the formation of finer grains at the surface which enhances the strength of a diffusion bond.
Abstract:
An assembly includes a threaded hole, a threaded fastener, and a locking compound. The threaded fastener is positioned in the threaded hole with a portion of fastener threads mated with a corresponding portion of hole threads. The locking compound is between the mated fastener threads and hole threads. The locking compound includes an aluminum pigmented compound suspended in a water-based inorganic binder.
Abstract:
A method for producing a yarn for constructing non-carpet textile articles which comprises producing a large denier synthetic carpet face yarn by a bulked continuous filament or bulked crimped filament sheath-core extrusion process. The yarn has a denier of at least 300, and preferably around 1400, and is comprised of a plurality of filaments in the denier range of 10-20 denier per filament. Each filament has an outer sheath of nylon or polyester and an inner core of polyolefin, with the sheath comprising 20 to 60% of the total weight of each filament and the core constituting the remainder. The yarn, although very large by the standards applied to non-carpet textile articles, has a silky, soft feel similar to yarns composed of much smaller filaments of homopolymer nylon or polyester, and is thus well suited for the manufacture of non-carpet textile articles, such as upholstery fabrics, sweaters and the like.
Abstract:
A method for inspecting a cold expanded fastener hole in a structural part to confirm that the hole has been expanded by a desired amount involves determining the degree to which the hole has been expanded as a function of the out-of-plane deformation in material surrounding an entrance or exit of the hole formed as a result of the cold expansion process. Out-of-plane deformation at either of the entrance or exit is compared to a model constructed from an array of experimentally or analytically determined out-of-plane deformation profiles for a hole with the same, or substantially the same, dimensions subjected to varying degrees of cold expansion. The degree of expansion of the hole is derived based on this comparison.
Abstract:
A system and method has one or more store and forward facilities, (SAFF) each associated with a plurality of subscriber facsimile machines. The SAFF include a computer for controlling operations and mass data storage equipment. A subscriber to the system delivers an outgoing facsimile message to the SAFF with which it is associated, which records the fax message, together with data as to originating facsimile machine and destination facsimile machine. The SAFF then delivers the facsimile message to the intended receiver facsimile machine, either directly or through another SAFF. If unsuccessful on an initial attempt, the SAFF periodically retries to send the facsimile message. The system also provides spooling of all facsimile messages for an intended receiver machine, which are all spooled upon connection with the receiver machine. Subscriber mailboxes are provided as part of the mass storage, which can be accessed by a subscriber to have his messages delivered to any facsimile machine he designates. Secure facsimile transmission is achieved through use of subscriber PIN numbers. Broadcasting redirecting messages and cost accounting can also be achieved by the system and method. After receipt of a message by the subscriber, the system may provide an immediate-reply service, allowing the recipient to immediately send out a message selected from a reply service menu. The system can also be used in cooperation with a paperless facsimile machine which directly displays the facsimile message on a screen and is capable of entering outgoing facsimile messages to the SAFF. The system can convert the received fax message into voice mail message and direct the converted voice message to a voice mail box as instructed by the message sender or recipient.
Abstract:
A remote control automatic gate assembly includes a hinged gate having a drive motor and track constructed on the gate itself with a sliding trolley connected to an adjacent post by a normally fixed length control arm. An automatic latching mechanism is provided which is operative in responsive to overtravel retracting movement of the trolley. The overtravel retracting movement of the trolley is taken up by slack adjustment mechanism to enable the gate to remain in its closed position during latching and unlatching of the gate.
Abstract:
A safety swim cap provided in a variety of fluorescent colors and consisting of a multitude of interconnected deflatable tubes disposed in a network to provide an outer rim surrounding an individual's head at the forehead portion thereof and criss-crossing tubes extending over the top of the individual's head, the tubes being inflatable from a single valve, and with a chin strap and buckle arrangement extending down from opposite portions of the rim tube in a manner to be secured beneath an individual's chin to retain the cap in position on the individual's head. These fluorescent colors will provide sharp visibility in placid or rough waters.
