The invention relates to a method for decreasing the frame error rate of information to be transmitted in the form of data frames in a data transmission system, in which the information to be transmitted is divided into data frames (102, 202). The data frame (102, 202) is supplemented with error correction data generated by using part of the information to be transferred. At least part of the information to be used in the generation of error correction data is protected by error correction coding (107, 206), by which an error correction coded data frame (108, 207) is obtained, in which different parts of the protected information have different error rates (BER). The error correction coded data frames (111, 212) are transferred in the data transmission channel from the transmitter to the receiver. The error rates of at least one part of the protected information are levelled out by shaping at the transmission stage that information part (207) which is protected by error correction coding and which is used in the generation of the error correction data.

Focused error correction and/or focused error detection is used in the information coding system. A speech encoding method, in which the number of speech parameter bits on which error correction coding and/or error detection coding focuses is automatically adjusted in relation to the number of total speech parameter bits as a function of the quality of the information transfer connection. There is no need to reduce the number of bits used for speech encoding. Thus the voice quality of the speech remains high. The error correction and/or error detection is focused on the bits most important for the voice quality e.g., as a function of the C/I (Channel to Interference)13 parameter describing the quality of the information transfer connection. The muting of speech synthesizing occuring in prior systems on poor information transfer connection is reduced by using focused error detection.

In the transmitter, a certain sequence of bits within each frame of digital information is convolutionally encoded and punctured before transmitting the frame over a wireless communication connection. The receiver decodes and depunctures the sequence of bits within each frame of digital information, that was convolutionally encoded and punctured, after receiving the frame over a wireless communication connection. The transmitter rearranges the sequence of bits within each frame of digital information that is to be convolutionally encoded and punctured, before convolutionally encoding and puncturing it. The rearranged order is one that has been found to produce, during the course of convolutionally encoding with a certain convolutional code and puncturing with a certain puncturing pattern, a convolutionally encoded and punctured sequence where the statistical probability of transmission errors exhibits a predefined behavior. In the receiver, the sequence of bits within each frame of digital information that was so rearranged in the transmitter is inversely rearranged so that the effect of said rearranging in the transmitter on the mutual order of the bits of the sequence is cancelled, after decoding and depuncturing the sequence of bits.

The adaptation is based on the low-band coding algorithm. It can be at least two types of such an algorithm: e.g., an algebraic code excitation linear prediction (ACELP) algorithm for a speech-like input signal and a transform algorithm of a non-speech-like input signal, such that when the ACELP coding is selected, the corresponding enhancing perception parameter is gradually tuned down and when the encoding algorithm is changed to the transform coding, the corresponding enhancing perception parameter is gradually tuned up.

The codeword comprises a first sequence of time ordered protected bits and a second sequence of time ordered unprotected bits, and the radio bursts together provide a set of time ordered bit positions. Successive bits of said first sequence are allocated to the radio bursts in a cyclical manner so that adjacent protected bits are allocated to different radio bursts, while successive bits of said second sequence are allocated to remaining bit positions of the radio bursts in the time order of those remaining bit positions. The radio bursts are then transmitted sequentially on different frequency bands.
