摘要: A stent includes a conduit defining a lumen; a first malecot adjacent the conduit, where the first malecot includes at least two members having at least one slit therebetween and where the at least one slit is in fluid communication with the lumen; and a second malecot including an annular structure surrounding and protruding from the conduit. A method for placing a stent includes inserting into a patient a stent and a stylet disposed within the stent, where the stylet includes an expandable member, expanding the expandable member, seating the stent, and removing the expandable member.

摘要: A blood reservoir for the treatment and collection of blood from two different sources. The blood reservoir has a filter/defoamer core assembly comprised of a support structure disposed within an outer defoamer. A separator with an opening is located in the support structure, dividing the support structure into a first and second portions. A depth filter is located within the first portion of the support structure. The first portion of the support structure with the depth filter forms a cardiotomy blood chamber and the second portion with no depth filter forms a venous blood chamber. This filter/defoamer core assembly is placed within a clear outer shell which forms the reservoir. This outer shell has a cover with a venous blood inlet and plurality of cardiotomy inlets. The cardiotomy inlets are in fluid communication with the cardiotomy blood chamber. The venous blood inlet is in communication with a center tube which extends through the first portion of the support cage, through the opening in the separator and opens into the venous blood chamber. The filter/defoamer core assembly may be assembled and positioned within the reservoir shell without the use of adhesives or bonding agents. This blood reservoir is typically used in a system including components to oxygenate and alter the temperature of the blood.

摘要: An arterial filter includes a filter housing provided with a uniquely shaped housing cover. The housing cover is in the shape of a toroid which forms a coil-like tunnel which is enlarged midway about the circumference of the housing cover. The highest point of the toroidal channel is at the periphery of the housing cover, approximately 180.degree. from the inlet valve. A gas vent is located at this highest point on the top of the toroid-shaped housing cover. At the center of the housing cover is an indentation which is provided to both retain a cylindrical filter element inside the filter housing, as well as allow visibility directly through the central axis of the arterial filter to verify proper operation of the filtration process. As inlet blood circulates through the toroidal tube forming the filter housing cover, gaseous matter is allowed to buoyantly escape out of the gas vent located at the top of the raised section of the toroidal channel. The remaining debubbled fluid seeps down into a reservoir formed between the cylindrical filter housing and the outer perimeter of the filter element contained therein. The filter element draws the fluid toward the center of the filter housing, as it simultaneously filters out undesired particulate and gaseous matter. The filtered product then passes into the hollow central area of the filter element and exits through an outlet vent located at the bottom of the filter housing.

摘要: A method and an apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention includes disposing a cover about a capillary used in a side-firing optical fiber. The cover can be used to protect the capillary when being inserted through an endoscope for medical treatment. In some embodiments, the cover can be a low-profile cover such as a coating made of a light-sensitive polymer or like material. At least a portion of the coating can be removed after insertion by exposing the light-sensitive material to laser energy transmitted from an optical-fiber-core end housed within the capillary. In other embodiments, the cover can be a slideable or moveable low-profile sleeve or metal cover. During insertion, the sleeve or metal cover is positioned over the capillary. After insertion, the sleeve or metal cover is retracted to expose the area to be treated to side-fired laser energy transmitted from the capillary.

摘要: A heat exchanger is provided which may be used in an integrated blood oxygenator and heat exchanger. The heat exchanger has a plurality of wave shaped sinusoidal channels on one or both sides. The heat exchanger has a cap attached at the upper end. The heat exchanger is disposed within a housing. The bottom end of the heat exchanger is bonded to the bottom end of the housing, and the upper end of the heat exchanger with the cap attached is spaced apart from the upper end of the housing. A liquid inlet and outlet are in fluid communication with the inner surface of the heat exchanger. A blood inlet and outlet are in fluid communication with the outer surface of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger may be used with a blood oxygenating chamber. The blood oxygenating chamber contains a plurality of permeable hollow fibers which oxygenate blood flowing through the blood oxygenating chamber. The blood oxygenating chamber is in fluid communication with the outer surface of the heat exchanger and the blood outlet.

摘要: A flexible endoscope includes a handle and a flexible shaft extending from the handle. The shaft includes a distal portion having a tubular wall defining a central lumen and a least two smaller lumens extending longitudinally through at least a portion of the tubular wall and a pull wire is disposed within one or more of the smaller lumens. The distal portion further includes an articulation layer disposed over the tubular wall and includes a first series of slots, which allow controlled bending of the distal portion by movement of one or more of the pull wires.
