A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for wireless communication are provided in connection with communication of safety messages by a device on behalf of other devices in a group. In an example, a communications device is equipped to receive attribute information from one or more UEs in a group of UEs, generate group attribute information based on the received attribute information, and broadcast the group attribute information on behalf of the group of UEs. In such an aspect, the communications device is a member of the group of UEs, and the leader of the group of UEs. In another example, a communications device is equipped to transmit, by a UE, attribute information to a leader UE of a group of UEs, and prohibit broadcasting at least a portion of the attribute information. In such an aspect, the communications device is a member of the group of UEs.

Safety message monitoring operations and/or safety message transmission operations are controlled for a mobile wireless communications device. The periodicity with regard to safety message monitoring and/or safety message transmissions is varied based on the environment of the mobile wireless device. The transmission power level with regard to safety message transmissions is varied based on the environment of the mobile wireless device. In some embodiments, safety message monitoring and transmission operations are disabled when the mobile device is determined to be inside a building or inside a vehicle. In some embodiments, safety message monitoring rate and safety message transmission rate is varied as a function of proximity to vehicular traffic and/or the level of detected vehicular traffic. In some embodiments, safety message transmission power level is varied as a function of proximity to vehicular traffic and/or the level of detected vehicular traffic.

Methods of determining a position of a mobile device in a vehicle are disclosed. An angular velocity of the vehicle, at a turning time while the vehicle is turning, may be determined according to input from an inertial sensor system of a first mobile device. A longitudinal acceleration, at the turning time, of linear acceleration along a longitudinal axis of the vehicle, may be determined according to input from the inertial sensor system. A lateral acceleration, at the turning time, of linear acceleration along a lateral axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, also may be determined according to input from the inertial sensor system. A first distance from the first mobile device to a rear axle of the vehicle may be calculated, based at least in part on the angular velocity, the longitudinal acceleration and the lateral acceleration.

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for classifying a motion state of a mobile device. In one embodiment, accelerometer data representing acceleration components along orthogonal x, y, and z axes of the mobile device are collected. A presence or absence of a half-step frequency relationship between the accelerometer data is determined. Last, the motion state of the device is determined based at least in part on the presence or absence of the half-step frequency relationship.

A peak lateral acceleration time, at which a peak value of linear acceleration along a lateral axis occurs while the vehicle is turning, also may be determined. The peak angular velocity time and the peak lateral acceleration time may be determined according to input from inertial sensors of a mobile device. The lateral axis may be perpendicular to the vertical axis and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle. A first time difference between the peak angular velocity time and the peak lateral acceleration time may be calculated. Based at least in part on the time difference, it may be determined whether the mobile device is in a front area of the vehicle.
